MC trans
It is worse than just pulling a final. To repair the transmission internals you will have to remove the trans case and do a complete disassembly. Get a service and parts manual for the machine.Looking at both will answer many questions you will have about what will need to be done. Luck,JimAnderson

Pedals
Bob, The clutch pedal bushing extends about four inches into the housing. It cannot be removed from the out side. You might get lucky and free up the two pedals with heat and liquid wrench. If these don't work then you will have split the trans and torque tube to get at the parts that are locked toget...

62 blade
Paul,
The blade on the 62 is heavy. You shouldn't have any problem lifting
a quarter of a cord of fire wood. One way to see what it will lift is
to chain a log to the blade. In my opinion I'd go for it.Luck,JimAnderson

3point
If the the 3 point is a a factory unit then it was taken from a 420 or later machine. The early 40c transmission housing has the same seat bolt pattern and dowel hole on the top as the later units.I am surprised that you don't see more more 40c machines with a three point retrofit but maybe it is jus...

430
You might make that center frame work but you will never make it look like a 430c.The 430c had two seperate parts to connect the engine to the transmission. The parts you are looking at is one part and the clutch linkage is internal.I own a 430T and four 430Cs and there are some parts that are interc...

Final seals
Danny, I am doing a pair of final drive shafts now.I have welded the worn area with 7018 and remachined the seal area to size.It may not be the most popular way to do it but it has worked for me.Spray welding ,done right is a good option but in my area no one does it that I trust. One of the shafts I...

420c
If you are having trouble figuring out how to tighten the tracks and how much you might want to get the shop manual for your machine. That manual and the parts manual will give you most of the info you need to adjust, maintain and repair the crawler. These manuals are afordable and worth every cent spe...

If you want to stay with John Deere equipment I would go to the closest JD industrial dealer and talk to the parts guy there. He should be able to give you a heads up about parts availablity on any JD machine. My local parts guy is one of the best people to deal with I've ever come across. He tells me...

Quill
ALPO, You can remove the ring gear quill without removing the steering clutch housing but it is much easier to pry out with the clutch housing removed.More than likely the seal in that quill is leaking so replacing it is best.Good luck getting the seal out of the quill. It is a bitch to get out.In my...

What you are looking at has 40c track frames and sprockets,at least on the side pictured. It looks like you have some adjustment left.Count the number of pads or links. You should have 35 on each side.If you have only 34 then someone has taken out a link to gain some limited run time.If rails are 40c ...

Introduction
Cuttingedge, Nice intro.Makes me wish I had done such a classy thing.Like most, I think,I just started asking for some info and my participation just grew from there. My father moved to a place just east of Agusta Maine in 1976 and until his death in 2008 he twitched fire wood with his 1957 420c.He ...

R&P
If your R&P set has been run for many hours, most have, you will notice wear on the pinion where it has been in contact with the ring gear.It is important to get the ring gear teeth to mesh in this wear zone. What you don't want to see is the ring gear making any contact outside this zone.If this cont...

Transmission
I take it you are interested in the cone point adjustment rather than preload. You could put the original shim pack in under the pinion cup and install the ring gear carrier.Paint the pinion with prussian blue and check the contact pattern.Without the setup gauge or original numbers etched on the pin...

yellow mc
In my opinion the orange MI is going to bring more return and interest down the road than any MC,regardless of color. They built over 10,000 MC's so it is a relatively common crawler.I am trying to restore a 40c that I've owned for over thirty years.I have driven from Va to Vermont just to get parts ...
