Hi, Wow. Looks like a good way to bust just about everything in the finals without a lot of effort. However, if you ever needed to go get another machine that got stuck in swampy ground, this would be a great candidate. A crawler-retriever, as it were. ;) I can see how it would be great on snow, too...

Hi, I learned, decades ago, that these things flood *very* easily. My method of starting is to get the thing cranking over, and then pull out the choke, pushing the choke about halfway in as soon as the first cuylinder pops. They will flood if you have the choke pulled out and then work the started....

Hi, The only place to mount an auxillary pump on a 420 that I can readily think of is on the PTO shaft. Some of the 440 wheel tractors I've seen used this method for running loaders and backhoes (using the stock pump for power steering). I can't recall ever seeing this done on a crawler, though. Stan

Hi,

The answer would also be 'no' if you're referring to automotive automatic transmission fluid.

The current name for JD hydraulic fluid is Hy-Gard, and that's what you want in the differential-style direction reverser. Plus, it's also what you want in the lift hydraulic system. :)

Hi, Well, after a bit of thinking and a few phone calls Up North, I've pretty much decided that I'm going to pass on the 440c and go for another 350 with a 6-way blade. It'll be easier to add a scarifier to a 350, and the whole rig will work better for what I have in mind, anyway. Plus, I can get a ...

Hi, The Autolites have a difference in the way they work the ground, so the spark is a bit more open to the combustion chamber. In the older all-fuel engines, meaning the M and the 40, which have lower compression, it appears that the Autolites produce a faster flame propagation than the Champions. ...

Hi, Thanks again, for refreshing my memory. I can picture the 440 finals in my head now that I've read your description. It's been a while since I've looked at a 440, as in 20 some years. I was just looking at the underside of a 420 this past weekend, as I was going over everything before putting th...

Hi, Thanks! That's what I thought - that one would use the 3-pt hitch on a 440 the same as one would on a 420. I'm unsure as to just what Deere did differently on the 440 final drive housings vs. the 420. I know that I'd not put a scarifier on a 3 pt on the 420 for fear of cracking the final drive h...

Scarifier on 440?

Hi, Here's an interesting question: Do you think that a 440, with heavier final drives than a 420, could handle having a scarifier mounted onto the rear without busting the poor, old thing? I have the opportunity to add my uncle's 440 to my dad's 420 (oh, no! the rampant machine collection disease i...

Hi, Could be a 440. They're 'the same thing, only different' vs. the 420. They went to a weldment on the nose, as opposed to a tin radiator shroud and seperate brush guard. They also had the dash from the 430, and used a flatter hood. This would make it appear like a 420, 2-cyl engine and all, yet a...

Hi, So, *that's* what one looks like with paint on it! :P I dimly recall when mine had paint on the track frames, but I was only a kid in grade school at the time and it's been long gone for a long time. There's paint on the rest of mine, under the usual dirt/oil film. My yellow stripe on the hood i...

Hi, Standing up isn't much of a problem. My 420c has ice caulks installed in place of the pad bolts. These have conical shaped heads and stick well above the stock bolt heads, about half the height of the cleats on the snow pads. They're meant to help hold the machine on ice, and work much like stud...

Lavoy, Yes, I can bet you have a few stories to tell. I grew up in a tractor shop and have seen my own share, although there were few crawlers in our area. You'd have worse crawler stories than I do, I'm sure. We did have one guy with four 350's, though. He dug ponds. He'd take two onsite - one to w...

Jimmy, Hmmm. Might be even closer than you think. The wife's screenprinting business, PKD Screenprinting, is on 401 practically across from Wake Tech (that's our local community college, so other folks reading the mail might understand the reference). Now, if you're a bit North of Revel's, then you'...

Hi, Yes, they *are* a disease, aren't they. I already have the multiplication problem. We just bought a X495 riding mower last month. I know that's not quite in the same league, but it *is* Yet Another Tractor! :) Besides, I'm always on the lookout for unloved iron alongside the road, so I never kno...
