Hi, Hmmm. Looks more like a 'needs little to be like new' to me! :P Actually, it looks a lot like a JD350 I was looking at about three weeks ago. That one was advertised with a 'fresh engine', and I found that they'd ripped the engine out of a 1520 wheel tractor and had it strapped to a pallet sitti...

Hi, Thanks for all the replies. I feel I can add the D3 to my short list of machines to look at when I see them for sale. If I were to get one, the pedal steering would be different as I'm used to levers, but I don't think that's something that would bother me for more than five minutes. ;) I'll go ...

Hi, Yep, that looks like a keeper to me. I was looking for a 350 with PAT up until a year ago. I grow tired of constantly beating on the blade pins for the 420c, you see. It seems like I adjust that blade a lot lately. Anyway, the PAT desire is there, but a decent 350 has proved hard to come by arou...

Hi, Yeah! The neighbor asked me if I could use my loader to move a pile of scrap wood from a remodeling job away from his house to a safer area for eventual burning (as soon as we get enough rain to wet things down, that is). I said 'no way' as the loader is on a wheel tractor., and a new one to boo...

Hi, Thanks. Very informative. I bookmaked that site before, but somehow managed to lose it. Of course, they didn't have a brochure for the D3B but I can infer quite a bit from the D3 and D3C ones based on what I saw sitting in front of me. :) I might wind up with it in the end, but I'm not jumping a...

Hi, Ah. That's the sort of info I've been looking for. I find it surprising that net searches for the Cat seem to come up rather sparse on data. I'm still trying to find data on the driveline and steering systems used - and the fact that it has a torque converter vs. direct drive is a case in point....

Hi,

Hmmm. You may have a point there. The spammers *are* probably more 'normal' than we are! I mean, who'd want to deal with tracks when they could be using wheels!! :P :P :P

Hi,

Yes, thank you.

I know it must take a lot of time to do so, there's a lot of useless stuff floating about the net. I get enough spam for Wonder Enhancements, Girls I Really Wouldn't Want To Meet and Lotteries I Won But Didn't Enter in my email box! :P

JD 450C vs. Cat D3B

Hi, I have a line on a decent enough looking and operating Cat D3B. From what I can find, the years they were made correspond to those of the JD 450C. Now, the 450C is something I'm familiar with. The D3B is something I am *not* familiar with. Anyone around here familiar with both that can give some...

Hi, I had to read this three times to understand it. It is the word 'barrel' that was confusing me. If I substitute the word 'bushing' then it makes a lot more sense (to me, anyway as we call these things pins and bushings on crawlers). As you say, it really doesn't matter all that much as most craw...

Hi, I use a mixture of diesel cetane booster and Marvel Mystery Oil. The local auto parts store stock the booster in something like 1/2 gallon bottles and the Mystery Oil in 40 oz bottles, which I mix into a gallon jug. I then put the mix into an old Sta-Bil measuring bottle and use 2 oz of the mix ...

Hi, Unfortunately, neither the 62 (420/430) nor the 63 (440) manual 6-way blade readily convert to PAT. They're designed to have pins and wedges hold them in place, and would wear things very quickly if one tried to use hydraulic cylinders in their place. If one could do so, I'd have done it a long ...

Hi, The early 450's have dry steering clutches, the later ones are wet. I think the change occured with the 450C, but if the 450's are like the 350's then there were some late-production 450B's with wet clutches. As I recall, you figured out your 450 was a straight-450 (no suffix letter), so you'd h...

Hi, Actually, there is only one small issue with using an 8v battery in these old girls. If you don't twiddle the regulator you'll discharge into the generator at idle. At operating RPMs, they charge fine. Just watch that ammeter and you'll know what it's up to. The 8v trick was one just about every...

Hi, I prefer to keep the system original. Six volts works fine as long as you keep the connections clean. The hardest part these days is coming up with the number zero gauge battery-to-starter wire. I see way too many number four gauge wires on the old girls, and that leads to hard starting. The big...
