Hi Andrew:
Nice find; I hope it is in as good a shape as it looks.
If you email me, I can send you a PDF copy of the Gearmatic 8a/8g winch manual. I found it useful getting mine working. Paul

John Deere 420/430 parts manual PC505
Hi: I tried to send some people a copy of the 420 parts manual and it didn't reach a few (email error message). Anyway, it's available for free from John Deere: http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.HomePageServlet_Alt Enter "420" and you"ll get a list of 420...

Problem with throttle
I'd suggest carefully taking the carburetor apart. You might have a partially plugged screen or a bit of something in one of the jets or pathways. A rebuild kit is cheap and the job is easy to do with some patience, compressed air and carb cleaner. If the carb has bigger issues, at least you'll know...

Hydraulic lever
Hi: Id be interested in hearing what your planning to do to reduce the slop. I chose to use brass bushings and epoxy-steel, but I considered brazing in the bushings. Thanks, Paul

Thanks for sharing ideas
Sounds like everyone in this discussion has had some experience with frozen threads. Unlike some projects which must be taken apart "right now", like my daughter's disc brake calipers, The 420 project can sit until I have the time to play with it. I've been spritzing the bolts with kerosene, or Liqu...

penetrants
Thanks for all the feedback. I'll give Kroil a try. I was pretty surprised how effective Dot 3 brake fluid was at loosening up my stuck slave cylinder. The time and patience, heat and the right wrench/socket approach have worked for me in the past - I like to heat to cherry red if I can and use the ...

Track realignment
Thanks for the info. I'm lucky in that I have snow pads on the crawler which lets me see the center of the sprockets and the idlers. I can easily use a straight edge (a piece of angle iron) to align using your method. The method used in the shop manual involves taking off the sprocket and using a st...

two questions: Preferred penetrating oil; aligning track
I've been using Liquid Wrench for a long time, but was wondering if anyone has found a "better" product. Thanks The right side track is skewed outward noticably. I'd like to realign it, but I'm concerned about breaking the cap hold down bolts. The tracks stay on and follow the idler and sprocket pre...

gearmatic winch fixed
I got a lot of good info on winches by using the search engine so maybe some one else will benefit from my experience. I was able to track why the gearmatic winch wouldn't free spool. The slave cylinder which pushes down on the shaft to the brake band was frozen/rusted/corroded - you get the idea. I...

gearmatic winch
Thanks for the info. I'll check for air. I opened the inspection port and it looks good inside by the band. I figured out how to do a search here and found a lot of good info. I downloaded the Gearmatic service manual (BG8a). It says to use 20 wt oil, but as soon as I filled the reservoir, I saw tha...

Gearmatic winch on 420c etc.
Hi: I'm new to this board and the posting format, so please forgive any mistakes while I'm learning. Anyway, I recently bought a dead 1957-58 420c, with 5 roll undercarriage, 6 way (manual) inside blade, a well made ROPS, and a Gearmatic winch (8a?). After tinkering and repairing a few things I got ...
