Re: 2010
Jim B did a good job explaining the process. One more thing, I think the book might say is, when rolling the engine over in the same direction as it runs, if you go passed tdc, don't turn it back to get there. You should turn it around again, the same way to achieve tdc.

Re: 350C ENGINE OIL PAN DRAIN PLUG STRIPPED
I think if the pan can be removed "easily", I would cut out the original plug hole and install a good hole from another pan. I also wouldn't use an expansion plug. Wouldn't trust it and chance ruining the engine form oil draining out.

Thanks Jim B--- I did the math twice and thought he was backwards on the numbers.

Re: 450-C Injection pump and timing questions
It might be the check valve in the fuel return line. It should be coming right out of the pump. It will be in the return fuel line and is about a $10.00 part which a 10 minute job to change out.

Re: 440ic Frozen Engine
I think I would remove oil pan drain plug ( gently) and see what comes out first-if it’s oil, today is your lucky day! If it’s water, it may be coming from exhaust pipe area and running into open valves, rings then pan. Then I would remove starter and try to bar engine over, if it rolls somewh...

Re: 440ic Frozen Engine
That's about all you can do. Some people will probably tell you to try pulling or pushing the machine while in gear. I don't like doing that because you can break rings or lands on the pistons. Even if it doesn't break anything, you'll still have the rust that was freezing it sliding up and down wit...

Re: I bought a 1010C dozer
I think the 1010 and 2010 were JD's first diesel engines. They did run a diesel in some of the 440s but they were a 2 stroke Detroit engine. Those engines would start quite well using starting fluid but, I don't recommend using starting fluid on the 1010 or 2010. I've heard that it's very apt to bre...

Re: 78 450c won’t turn over but one revolution?
Happy you found the problem. I found out a long time ago to start with the easiest tests first but, I still tend to overthink a problem. I'll admit that electrical problems are my weak suite. Good luck with your moisture problem. I'd let it set a while and remove the tranny drain plug to capture the...

I would agree no starting fluid has been used. Won’t turn fast enough to warrant it lol. Only ever used starting fluid a few times since I’ve owned it when it had sat a long time in cold temps. So I don’t think that’s the problem

Sounds like what happens when too much starting fluid is used.

Re: reverser
The 420 has a direct gear reverser, I believe. Sometimes operators don't use the clutch and stop the machine before utilizing the reverser and that causes the rounding of the gears causing it to jump/slip out of gear. I think the 1010 was JD's first model to use a hydraulic reverser which could be u...

Re: New OS piston clearance
GAS---- If, indeed, you get .003-.005 wear upon break-in/seating, it is so minute in relationship to a bore of 3/4/5/6 inches. When installing the rings notice the amount of compression that is needed to slide them into the cylinder. After installed the end gap should be measured to assure that its ...

Re: 350 diesel engine miss
In reference to the mentioned check valve at the pump--I had a JD tire tractor with a bad one and it would start, run 15/20 seconds and die. I could let it set a minute and do it again.
