Thanks. I did read somewhere that heating to 250 deg F will allow a gear disassembly of Devcon with a gear puller. However, I like your other theory: I'll never need to take it apart again! Gil

And what type of luck do you have taking them apart later? I mean like in a year or more. Gil

New addition to an old thread. I saw that a guy on eBay was selling 2 pound kits of Devcon Titanium Epoxy Putty for $100 plus $20 shipping, a little over half the normal price. My understanding is that it last on the shelf for a good deal of time, so I thought I would buy this larger kit to try.. I ...

Yeah I bought it.
Lots of fun trailering the crawler down the country mountain roads in Tennessee. Smoked my brakes real good a couple times.

The "small" versus "big" transmission: JD440 Serial # 440001 – 448000 M4256T “small” transmission used on earlier crawlers. Has a fill plug on the right hand side of the case. Has no top cover plate under the seat on top of the housing. JD440 Serial # 448001 up (diesel introduced) T11396 “big” trans...

This is a list of the John Deere blades as I far as I have been able to compile them. I will try to find a better way to display the data since I do not know how to embed a table or enter tabs on the website. The first "column" is the blade model number. The second is the crawler it came on. The thi...

Hydraulic tensioners are not covered in any version of the JD440 Service Manual. Probably were covered in a Bulletin. The parts are in the Parts Manual however. The inside of the tube can have a scratch or a gouge in it to allow grease to pass. Was it doing this before? Sounds like the new seal may ...

I have pulled a transmission out the rear before (I had the final drives off). My moment of concern was pitting it back in when I wondered if it would line up properly going over the hump and not damage a bearing or seal. But being an old Harley rider, I did not force it, I just used a bigger hammer...

Like PaPa always said about corn... "Knee high by the fourth of July." I have a similar problem trying to pick the best tracks from a pile of not so perfect options. In my case I need 12 inch pads to use with an inside mount dozer blade. All my dozer pads are 14 inch, so I am considering using a goo...

Lavoy can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe his blade shown in the pictures you referenced, is a Model 64. The parts manual is available on the John Deere website. Gil

You need to adjust the rear clutch pack first before you adjust the front one; even if it has been working in the reverse position. I would recommend keeping the rear clutch a little loose at first and see if it will allow the front clutch pack to be adjusted correctly. Gil

Dollar bills are made out of extremely high quality linen paper. It leaves no lint and will not tear easily. Make sure your distributor is free of moisture. Remove the points plate and clean underneath it. Also look closely at the insulator around the wire coming into the distributor. Look at all th...
