Thanks Lavoy. I might order when I am in Florida after the new year. Freight is cheaper and easier than having them shipped here to Canada

Just an update. These rollers are approx 1" less diameter than the correct ones. Probably not a good setup when they are mixed on one side. Amazing what people do to keep an old rig running! Can't quite make out the part number yet but looks too long for a JD part number

40c rollers

Just checking the rollers on my 40c 4 roller. I notice that 5 out of the 8 have blind ends with no place for a grease fitting. However there is a plug in the center of the roller itself, I assume for lubrication. From what I can see in my parts books, these rollers are not original to any of the 40c...

Thanks to everyone for all the great suggestions. I put some good quality thread sealer on the bolt, a fibre washer under the nut and was able to get an old l shaped socket handle, that I've had for 50 years and seldom used, in past the ring gear to hold the nut while I tightened the bolt. Filled th...

40c transmission leak

I recently overhauled the steering clutch in my 40c. In the process I found that someone had previously striped the threads for the front lower clutch housing bolt. Their solution was to drill through the boss in the transmission and put a nut on the inside. I didn't think that this would create a p...

Lavoy,
Thanks. I would like to get my crawler together this weekend so I will try to make one. If that fails I will order one when I am in the US this winter. Shipping to Canada is slow and expensive. Do you also have a AM1935T plug for the clutch housing? Thanks,
Dave.

Just getting things back together and apparently there is no sleeve for the throw-out bearing carrier. How critical is this. The cam and bearing carrier seem to operate ok without it. Should I try to make one from a piece of tubing? Thanks,
Dave.

Installing my new 40 steering clutch today and have a few questions. (1). How do I "exercise" the clutch before adjustment as directed in the bulletin? (2) On the new pressure plate there are spring clips on the release levers covering the head of the adjustment bolts. I assume I need to remove thes...

Lavoy, Thanks for the help. I removed the rear cover, loosened the bolts on the clutch housing and was able to tap the quill out from inside very easily. I do have the seal that is not shielded so I assume it's just a matter of greasing it well and being careful on the install so it dosen't roll. Th...

Lavoy, I have received a copy of a page from a 350 crawler manual dated Aug 73 that says "use the center tang of the gauge marked ENGINE for this check. STEERING notch is used only for 1010 crawler steering clutches." Which is correct for my 40c steering clutches this manual or the earlier bulletin ...

Thanks, I'll keep at it. Just didn't want to be continuing to do the same thing if it wasn't giong to work. I'll spray some oil around it and keep wiggling it and try to turn it as well. I've got a long rod in the recess for one brake post and a pair ov visegrips on the other post to give some lever...

Clutch Housing seal 40c

Does anyone know if I have to remove the steering clutch housing to get the quill off the side of the differential to replace the seal. I am rebuilding my clutch and see evidence of transmisssion oil leaking into the housing. I have removed all of the bolts from the quill and it is loose but it wont...
