Re: JD 450 Pinion Shaft stuck
You're welcome. I never owned, operated or worked on a dozer before I got this one but I've learned a lot since I've had this one. Lots of good folks with a lot of knowledge on here.

Do a search for "Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft" and you'll see the same problem I had.

Re: JD 450 Pinion Shaft stuck
I just went thru the same problem with my straight 450. The problem was the bearing on the far side of the bull gear. The bearing may be loose but when you pull on the shaft it tilts enough to bind and hold the shaft. I used a rod to tap the bearing to keep it perpendicular to the shaft and it came ...

Final Drive Seal
I'm replacing a steering clutch on my straight 450. While I'm in there I am going to replace the seal for the pinion shaft. Can anybody tell me if the seal needs to be driven out toward the track or toward the transmission?

Re: Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
Got the shaft out! Got in there enough to tap the inner bearing off the shaft then a few slams with the slide hammer and out it came. Sure am grateful for this forum and all the helpful people on it. Now to get a new clutch set from Lavoy.

Re: Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
Thanks for the reply Jim. I've thought about tapping on the bearing but haven't tried it yet. I'll give that a try and see what happens.

Re: Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
Yep, unfortunately I got ahead of myself and missed that step in the manual. Took it out instead of just loosening it. The problem now is I can't get the shaft back in to the original position to put it back in. If the inner race is in the final drive housing I'm thinking it won't do any good to try...

Re: Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
Still haven't gotten this shaft out. This shaft has 2 tapered bearings, one outer and one inner. It looks like the inner bearing won't come out past the final drive gear. When the shaft comes out does the inner bearing stay in the race? Should it slip off the shaft? Can it fall down into the final d...

Thanks for the reply. At least that makes me feel better. Looks like I'm doing the right thing, just not enough of it.

Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
http://jdcrawlers.lcent.com:8000/johndeere/albums/userpics/10008/normal_IMG_0726.JPG I'm in the process of replacing a steering clutch on my straight. I'm at the point of removing the final drive pinion shaft but not having much luck. I easily got it out about 1" but it's stopped and hasn't budged ...

450 Drive Clutches
Got a question for the experts. My 450 straight seems to have a final drive problem. I had it apart recently (not the final drives) and adjusted the clutches per the manual. Got it back together and it seemed to do fairly well but the right drive seemed weak. If I get in a hard push the left track w...

Re: 450 Won't Charge
Hey Randy, good to hear from you. Thanks for the offer but I got a new voltage regulator from Lavoy and that fixed the problem. It's charging now. All is fine here, just a lot of rain like last year and going a little stir crazy. I'm retired now and itching to get out and move some dirt when things ...

Re: 450 Won't Charge
Get me one if you can Lavoy. My original model number is RS2J1B. I'll post a picture as soon as I figure out how to do it. The new instructions have me confused.
