That would be a good idea, I never even thought about installing the drum first. If Deere would have designed it this way things would be easier for sure. I've rebuilt both sides in my 350 straight. The snap ring you mention holds things together...it'll have to be in place if you want to run the dozer. Otherwise you've wasted your time and money and will most likely damage something else. Here is a video that might help. The 1.06 mark to be specific....

What model dozer?

Is it the big circlip? The ends are shaped like a "V" as opposed to two little holes like most snap rings.

Either way I would say you need to pull the final back off and put the clip on. It a pain, but totally necessary.
