Re: Forum

Facebook probably draws a lot of traffic away.

I try to visit once in a while as this site is full of knowledge and I don't want it to die.

Re: Potential 420c Purchase

Look for a tag on the generator. Delco Remy generators had tags on them (not saying it hasn't been removed or a rebuilt was installed at some point). In general, if the tag has a black background, they are 6 volts. 12-volt tags had a red background. 6 or 12 volts was generally embossed on the tags....

Re: Oil and oil recommendations

The right hand reverser has its own resovoir, so if you have one dont just put the oil in the transmision and think your good. there are seals between the revereser and transmission. You must be thinking of the other reverser. The gear type, with the lever to your right as you sit in the seat, I ha...

Re: engine oil for 1958 jd 440 ic

If a gas engine, Deere specified 10W30 in summer and 5W20 in winter. I don't think the 15W40 will hurt it though IF you aren't using it in the cold.

I don't think having a bar across the links, under the snow hole, for a bolt would work well. The points of the sprockets come into that area.

Jim
Didn't think of that.

Re: Any body play around with rubber pads on 420 or other crawlers?

Do your tracks have snow holes in them? Could put a piece of steel bar through the chain underneath for a place to put an extra bolt through to secure whatever you're adding. I've thought about wrapping a strip of conveyor belt around the entire track to make the machine road friendly. Not sure how ...

Re: 420C Sediment bowl

While you are in there, remove the inlet fitting from the carb and you will find a strainer. It may need to be cleaned if the bowl screen was missing.

I don't know how cold it is there but ice in the pickup tube and cylinders would cause this problem for me.

Re: John Deere 420c steering clutch adjustment

Are you absolutely sure you have free play after the clutch pedal lets go of the clutch, and it's not just the slop in the linkage?

Maybe your flywheel is warped.

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

Having your battery on the fender may be part of the issue. With 6 volts your cables have to be twice the gauge or half the length that they would be on 12 volts. If your wire to the starter is longer than factory, then also make it heavier than factory.

Re: John Deere 420c steering clutch adjustment

I did not mean to say that having the bolt at the edge is correct adjustment of the fingers, just that it is as far as you can go with it and if it won't push the fingers in then it has to come apart. The fingers are levers, so as the clutch wears inward the fingers would move outward and the bolt w...

Re: John Deere 420c steering clutch adjustment

These old tractors get a lot of slop in the pedal that you might have mistaken for free play. I had to adjust mine recently and the clutch engages just off the footrest now, I know it's not correct but hard to tell with the wear in there. Based on only running for a few minutes I think your clutch w...

Texans are trying to keep their swimming pools unfrozen. It's a catastrophe!

-22 F is mighty cold by northeast standards, let alone Iowa. Keep the sinks in remote parts of the house trickling water.

Re: White Christmas!!!

I say a white Christmas does not exist. This year, we had a few inches still on the ground on Christmas Eve. It totally melted by Christmas morning. The very next day it snowed again.
