Derek -

That's interesting. I know they said it wasn't a problem at all when I had the starter totally rebuilt; windings and all. I know it came back with a new drive and I'm glad it did.. kicks in and out nice and smooth.

I assume the starters are totally different from the 420 I'm working on and the 440 you have there jd440.. but a new drive is well worth it. I just had one put on my starter as I had it reworked. Good luck.

Best I can tell they are the right chains... I 'm pretty sure at this point that someone had a whole 40 crawler for parts they were robbing at some point. Ohh well... 8)

Alright.. I'll do that first thing in the morning. Thanks for the info.

That was my next question... how to tell the two apart! :D

Do the clamps come with the special bolt and nut so you can remove it by hand easily?

Will that hurt it any? Seems to have been running fine.

I'm pretty sure someone had a 40 parts tractor since it has lots of 40 parts on it.

Yeah.. that's actually why it came off the site I'm clearing and grading.. to tighten the tracks. Here is what it looks like right now... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y49/NCSU4x4/420%20Crawler/DSC00356.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y49/NCSU4x4/420%20Crawler/FrontIdler1.jpg http://i2.photo...

I don't think I'd tackle anything that big with a little crawler. Most of the time I'm pushing little trees out though I find if I can dig just a little arround it, put the blade in and disrupt the soil all arround and cut some roots, it comes out much easier.

1957 420c

This is my lil 420c. It's a '57 ser. number 107,xxx Recently converted it back to 6v pos. ground and reworked the accesories on the motor. Recent job to tackle was the clutch casing on one side that was cracked and to tighten up the carriages for the tracks. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y49/NCSU...

6V electrics

Charles-

I just converted a '57 420 back to 6v from a cheap 12v swap. I've been very happy with it. Hope you are too.. just keep the grounds clean, big battery cables, and lots of battery.

Someone needs to do like I've seen others do... just tell him if it is that horrible they'll take it off his hands no charge. Won't even charge him to haul it away. Bet he'll reconsider. 8)

Ahh.. someone always has to complain about something..

I think the new board is great. It is very nice to have it so similar to johnnypopper so it's easy to remember how to do things!

Tach - Dealers

I hate dealers like that too. I'm lucky enough to have a dealer with in 5 miles of the shop that enjoys getting his books out and talking about the two cylinder stuff with me. I've also found he has less mark up than other dealers arround. Burns me when my dad has to get something fast and deals wit...
