sounds like either you don't have proper clutch pack thickness (sure you have the right number of steels and fibers?) or pressure plate not set at correct height. Did you reuse or replace the steels? no chance the clutchs got oil contaminated during or after the rebuild. You seem to have ruled out r...

I would like to bring your attention back to what JDemaris was trying to point out. - Where did the water come from??? Is it antifreeze/water from the cooling system? If so it could be from the head gasket, the liner rings or a crack in the block. No matter which of these it might have come from you...

JDemaris, Now you have to admit, about the only way you can get more polish than Alpina is to go a tad north to say Posin or Onaway. I don't expect any sales clerk to know squat. Then I'm not dissapointed. Buyer beware. The NAPA in Gaylord is an old operation,In the 14 years going there I think ther...

I understand that the technique for putting the piston into the sleave on a detriot diesel requires a special ring compressor. Broken rings result if not done correctly.

JDE,
Could it be that the 3 dowels have been replaced with bolts? Seems like I remember someone on here having to do that for some reason.
Still have your place in Michigan? Very little snow this year so far. We are almost 40 inches behind normal so far here in Gaylord.

Fortgary, Welcome, If it still has the serial # tag on it (carburator side of the bellhousing) that will simplify identifying where it is in the production run. This is important for getting the correct parts. However these old girls often have a combination of major components that may contain diff...

The carrier for the ring gear in the transmission is solid, no differentiation. It is a true "locker". Both tracks should spin under the situation you wrote about. I suspect that the non driving side steering clutch is a. worn out and slipping, b. out of adjustment and slipping or 3. oil contaminate...

While I agree that this may be a parts crawler, to think that you are not going to see welds and missing bolts and worn missmatched parts on almost any crawler more than 60 years old is a bit unrealistic. Mine is a loose assembilage of mixed parts, welded finals, 0% pins and bushes, grousers worn com...

I question wheather those holes are sleavable. It looks to me like you would be better off looking for a complete running engine. there was one for sale in my are a couple of years ago in good shape for $1200 so right in the ballpark of all the parts and machineing plus the cost of a good core block...

Pull a spark plug and ground it while someone cranks it to check for spark. If no spark check out that issue. If you have spark, shoot a teaspoonfull of gas in the sparkplug hole and put the plug in and try starting. If it fires well on the fueled cylinder several times then you are not getting fuel...

Lavoy,
It sounds like he is dealing with a cast iron plumbing plug. Seeing how his first welding attempt failed, how would you weld a nut to what is left? Special rod?

Fruitcake, 1. Are you SURE you are workong on the drainplug? 2. If it is a cast plug it isnt going to weld well as you found out. 3. Be careful about putting that much heat on the casting in one area, you could pop the case. 4. May have to drill it out and tap to the next larger plug size. Chuck
