Lavoy, that is good to know! When I do use the crawler in the winter it's usually for a couple hours. That happened 3X this fall and winter.
I got into some mud on a hill trying to push a brush pile. It finally got so slick I had to give it up. Spent almost an hour cleaning up the tracks!

Re: Oh crap!
You definitely made me nervous ! I did not change oil last fall. I did start the crawler when it was 15 degrees! I guess the bullet missed.

Re: Master pins
Thanks, ordered one. All my searching for one came down to knowing what to ask for . All I was finding were the pin type.

Master pins
Not really the pin, the clip is the problem.
What tool do you use to expand the clip? Where are they available? I have not been able to find anything that looks like it would work.
I manufactured a tool (modified a battery terminal pliers) to put one on but it was marginally usable.

Snow!!
Lavoy, you'd love it here now, 2 ft of snow! I've had to push berms out 2 times to keep a driving lane in my 1\2 mile driveway. Snow off my roof is over 5' high now. My 420 will be pushing snow again tomorrow! Problem.... A couple days back I need to do snow pushing. It was very cold, been in low si...

Re: steering clutch wont disengage
I've owned 3 Cats, D2 and 2 D4s. I now have a couple of 420s and a parts machine. The steering clutches are NOT the same. I did use a couple gallons of solvent in one of the D4s to free up the steering clutches and drained out a bunch of rust. This will not work on a JD. It might end up costing you ...

Re: Oil and oil recommendations
My gear type, 1956 420, gets oil from the transmission. No separate oil fill. If you ever work on it, put at least a cup or more of oil in it before final assembly with the transmission. If left dry, it won't get oil quick enough to prevent damage.

Re: Rear PTO and 3 Point hitch questions
I put a PTO on my 420. Simply remove the cover where the PTO goes and bolt it on. I did put new seals in the old unit before putting it on and generously lubed it too.

Re: 420c steering to the right...
Is it dragging on one side or possibly slipping on the other? Might want to check the other side!

It doesn't have any sway chains. Where the arms attach, there is only a limited amount of side movement. I didn't see a need for them.

Assuming you looked on both sides, look for a weld.

Re: Has anybody managed to setup alternative Sway chains for 440 3 Point Hitch?
Sway chains would have to be attached at the same pivot point as the arms and move with the arms. That is where my JD wheel tractor is attached. About a foot inside the arms attaching point. They have turn buckles and don't allow much movement. Sometimes I even have to loosen them to attach an imple...
