Hi,
Ah! Someone else that has their dad's machine. I don't know about you, but for me that makes it something special.

hi, Looks like a pretty nice job, at least from the ebay photos. I bet it would get a lot of attention at shows. That makes sense, though, as I'd not ever heard of a 5-roller Lindeman MC and I figure if they had made such it'd been worth a mention in one of the many JD history books I have on the sh...

5-roller Lindeman MC on eBay?
Hi, I've never seen an MC like this one before. Looks like a set of Lindeman tracks and frames, which I knew some were made, but this is a 5-roller. It's the first 5-roller MC I've ever seen. It's out in WY, and I don't have a particular interest in it, but I thought that someone else on the board m...

Probably only arguement for leaving it as a button head is that someone may grab just any old grease gun and pump regular gun grease in there. Regular gun grease is too thick, and can stick the roller, especially in cold weather. Lavoy Yes, good point. In our case, it was just dad and I who would u...

Hi, I pump a few stokes and then use a scribe (or awl, doesn't matter) on the ball to let the air out. I repeat this until I get lube oil back out instead of air, at which point the thing is half full of oil. :) I'm still using 140 weight from a 5 gallon can dad had from the late 1960's, so the thin...

Hi, The button head ones are much harder to damage, which is why they use them, I presume. Dad got tired of the chore of cleaning the dirt out from under the buttons of the ones on his 420, so he replaced them with zerk ones. Every once in a while one of the zerks gets damaged, but it's easy enough ...

Hi, Kewl! You're halfway there with the parts manual. Those diagrams are quite useful. The service manual is loaded with instructions on how to get things apart, and more importantly, back together again! :p Once you have both manuals, you'll be fairly well off. After that, it's a matter of finding ...

Hi, Are you fairly knowledgeable about wheel tractors in general? If so, that'll make it easier to understand crawlers. The major differences, you can see (i.e. tracks instead of wheels, track frame, track rollers, etc). From the engine through the transmission, things are pretty much the same as on...

Hi, Yep. I kinda figured it was the old battery post welded to the gas tank trick at work. My 420c hasn't had the bolt hold down for 30 years, *but* it has had a piece of wood that is cut to follow both angles under the tank. When this is wiggled into position, it holds the battery down as well as p...

Hi, Red paint? Where's the red paint? Should be either green (ag) or yellow (ind). Perhaps something was rebuilt along the way and repainted with a red primer? I can tell you that all my Deere machines (M, 40T, 420C, 430W) have no primer under the factory paint. In that era, they usually dipped the ...

Hi, Wow. Looks like a good way to bust just about everything in the finals without a lot of effort. However, if you ever needed to go get another machine that got stuck in swampy ground, this would be a great candidate. A crawler-retriever, as it were. ;) I can see how it would be great on snow, too...

Hi, I learned, decades ago, that these things flood *very* easily. My method of starting is to get the thing cranking over, and then pull out the choke, pushing the choke about halfway in as soon as the first cuylinder pops. They will flood if you have the choke pulled out and then work the started....

Hi, The only place to mount an auxillary pump on a 420 that I can readily think of is on the PTO shaft. Some of the 440 wheel tractors I've seen used this method for running loaders and backhoes (using the stock pump for power steering). I can't recall ever seeing this done on a crawler, though. Stan
