First: I don’t see the alignment issue you refer too. It would be hard to tell until the tracks are tightened. The track frame does adjust with spacers to align it, but it is not usually a problem. More track alignment issues are caused by worn idlers, sprockets, and rollers. The track frame does no...

You can find answers to all your questions, plus good detailed pictures in the John Deere 440 Tractor Service Manual, which covers the wheel tractor and the crawler. Or even the Operator's Manual for the crawler might be worthwhile for you. It is not as detailed as the Service Manual but will get yo...

eBay "original paint" JD440IC

A new definition to the phrase "the paint you see is original"!!?? I did not realize that in 1959 the original factory paint scheme for the radiator was black with yellow overspray. Gil

57jd420 is probably referring to the spring in the float control portion of the valve. A valve with float control may have been an option but is frequently found with the bulldozer blade. Look in the parts manual for the blade or it may be included in the parts manual for the JD1010 itself. Even if ...

The part you asked about is a wiper seal, primarily used to keep dirt out of the cylinder, not to keep oil in. If your cylinder is leaking it is from a seal or packing within the cylinder. Depending on the design, you have to remove a threaded fitting, spring clip, etc. to remove the end of the cyli...

The JD440 hydraulic adjust is no longer available from Deere. The JD350 adjuster will work but looks a little different if you are looking for original restoration. There is an after-market hydraulic adjuster that is considerably cheaper and I have heard a number of people say they are very happy wi...

Until you get the friction washers and have the time and joy of trying to get the handle off; you can always hook a tarp strap or bungee cord to the throttle handle. Slide it up the handle for higher revs. Gil

Model 50/51 Backhoe swing cylinder (JD420/430/440/1010/2010)

Has anyone ever found a source for the internal rubber and leather components for the swing cylinder on a Model 50/51 backhoe? Because I do not have any replacement parts, I have never torn mine apart, but I assume that it has vanes with seals that wipe against the sides of the barrel cylinder. Is t...

Paul’s comments about the insulator bushing are worth checking into. You may not visually see any deterioration of the insulation, so put some tape around it to test it. Next time you order parts you should replace the insulator blocks in any case. Have you taken the points plate off and inspected t...
