Re: Fly wheel questions

Have you had this a while and the problem developed or did you acquire it with this problem? When you say it grinds do you mean it spins but won't engage? What is the voltage across the terminals of each battery, not running? What is the voltage at the solenoid's battery cable terminal, not running?...

Re: What gas for an old 420c?

I run 87 octane with 10% ethanol in all my gas engines, not many places around with ethanol free around here. I don' have any problems with it. I don't use additives, like lead substitutes, other than maybe a shot of Seafoam or Marvel Mystery oil now and again the same as I did with leaded gas. The ...

Re: JD 440IC Steering Clutch Adjustment

This may be just a difference in terminology however "All the way back" on the throwout bearing means it is away from the pressure plate to me. All the way out would indicate it was at the outer end of the slot, towards the pressure plate, as dtoots1 is suggesting.   You have to use a third-party ho...

Re: 400G Owners

It would be best if you start by making a list of the parts you are looking for from the parts catalog, by parts catalog name, part number, and quantity required. Here is a link to the 400G Parts Catalog (PC2209) open to the drawbar page, which shows the parts you are looking for, I think. They are ...

Welcome to the Boards John. Posts like this for your 1010C and its attachments should be on the Early Models Board. This Board is for questions and info related to the boards, not equipment. It will likely get moved to the Early Models Board by a Moderator. This Board is only visible when one is log...

Re: 440 tractor hyd filter

Did the dealer do a system search to see if any other dealer might have a NOS one setting on the shelf? Beyond that you will have to see what you can mount in the suction line to the pump or in the return line from the valve to the reservoir. If you can get some measurements from the remains of the ...

Re: 440 tractor hyd filter

You could join Yesterday's Tractors Forums and ask about this filter on their John Deere Forum. They have more wheel tractor-oriented folks there. One of them might have or be familiar with that loader and have a cross for the U10280 filter. John Deere dropped most of the letter suffixes years ago s...

Is that a replaceable filter element or is it a cleanable screen/mesh?

Re: 450C 1975 skid plate/belly pan removal

The parts catalog shows the rear bolts are 5/8". I would expect the nuts to be 15/16" hex if standard nuts. If they happen to be heavy hex nuts they will be 1-1/16" hex. You could cut the heads off to drop the pan then replace the bolts. It is a pain (less than dropping the belly pans to me) but the...

Re: 1010C Compression Test Results

Multipurpose hydraulic fluid will be ok in the hydraulics. If you have a reverser, you only want to use a Type A equivalent transmission fluid or a premium Universal Transmission Hydraulic Fluid (UTHF) meeting the John Deere J20C specification (or JD Hy Gard). The reverser has wet clutches in it and...

Re: 1010C Compression Test Results

You haven't said but I will guess this is a gas engine, not diesel. (Giving all the facts is important.) You have some low cylinders, and it may need a ring job; or more. You say it has set for several years. I would make the attempt to get it running before going down the rebuild road. If you want ...

Re: JD450C 1975 New Starter Motor Needed

The links I gave you go to the parts catalogs. John Deere puts the wiring diagrams in the Technical (service) manuals, which are a purchase item. eBay can be a good place to find a used John Deere 450C Technical Manual (publication number TM1102). If you have a friendly JD dealer, they might give yo...

Bruce has given you a good option. For future reference. In the US we can access the JD parts books online. I don't know if the site we use is available in NZ, you will have to try going to it. Here is a link to the site, please let us know if it works for you: https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/ A...
