Hi, Well, he got a battery. Now it fires up. On two of the three cylinders, anyway. Sounds like a piston is hitting on a dropped valve. He ran it long enough to take off my trailer, anyway, and he gets to work on it from here. I've seen enough, I think, at this point to refuse to own one if someone ...

Hi, Ah! So, *that* is the 440 I missed going with you to see when I was there the other day and your wife had wanded off with your truck! Looks fairly decent, really decent for the $500 bucks! :) It's in a lot better shape that that 40c you have, anyway! After seeing your place, I've decided that I ...

Hi, We had one of those. Came with the 420c. It had never been used. The dairy farmer that originally bought dad's 420c bought both the 62 blade and the root rake. he never used it, and neither did we. I left it sitting out behind the barn when I sold the place in NY. I didn't think I'd ever have a ...

I hate skid steer loaders

Hi, Well, I never really liked them in the first place, preferring crawler-dozers and regular tractor-loaders. However, I didn't dislike them - much less hate them. Oh, I hate them now! Or, at least I hate this New Holland LS140 that has managed to land in my yard. See, a friend at work bought this ...

Hi, I'll look thru my crates of leftover parts. I seem to recall having a couple new ones around. When our dealership closed, dad grabbed every 420 crawler part there was and put it into the barn. Worse comes to worst, I can always pull one off of my 420c and send it to you as I can't recall that we...

Hi,

My 420c is very late in the phase-III production and it came from the factory with the RH dipstick in 1958. Just for reference, as I've never seen another 420 this way.

Hi, Mmmmm. Applesauce. Molassas. This thread is sounding mighty tasty! ;) Don't forget other tasty descriptions, like Butter and Jam for the thick stuff! :P That tongue there is me licking my lips, BTW! What do we call that thin engine oil most new cars and trucks are using, the 5W stuff? Apple Juic...

Hi,

Yeah, hot to the touch means over 120 deg F, which really does not say much, does it? Time to get one of those cheap infrared electronic thermometers, I think, and come up with an actual temperature.

[quote="Ray IIIThat's interesting. Does it say what weight the oil is? Definitely save the pail when you've used it up. I always say that any lube is better than no lube, so in the case of leaky roller seals you're better off using some kind of grease. It is not as good as gear oil for the specific ...

Hi, You're not going to beleive this, but I'm still using the same Socony-Vacuum Oil Co. Gargoyle-Brand No 10 gear lubricant that my dad used in the old girl from Day One. This is from a 5 gal pail that's at least the same vintage as the crawler and probably older. There's still about half of the pa...

Hi, Back when positive ground was selected in these things, there *was* an electro-migration issue with the points contacts themselves. Essentially, if you positively grounded the system, there was less migration of metal from one point contact to another than with negative ground. As time went by, ...

Hi,

The generator can be polarized either way. If he had it neg gnd, and you go pos gnd, then you'll have to repolarize the generator. He might also have reversed the ammeter wires, if he didn't like it reading Discharge when it was Charging after the polarity swap. :P

Later!

Hi, Well, it was leaded in the day for most bands. Amoco was always unleaded, but can't think of another brand that was in 1956. When leaded was being phased out, all our older stuff was weaned off of lead by mixing leaded and unleaded with progressively less leaded tankful by tankful. This was to p...

Hi, Oh, I didn't mean to imply that adding a reverser would not be worthwhile. I do like having one, even if I don't always use it in favor of the reverse in the transmission. I was just pointing out that if the 1010 bearing was like the 420's then you could get by fairly well without one. In fact, ...
