Lavoy,

What makes you think it is air? This is a positive flow system with a waste pipe returning to the tank. If it was drawing air, it would not run very well.
You should have 50 plus PSI on the input fuel pipe going in to the block.
Could be a little water or moisture that is freezing at night.

I am the proud owner of an original JD Pilot Touch Operator's Manual. I have gotten so much good info from this site, I like to give back when I can. Enjoy the pics of what it looks like and how it worked. I agree with Lavoy, when it comes to operating equipment, some people can tear up an anvil wit...

Lavoy,

Looks like a nice fit and it does make the wiring easier.
I noticed that there is not much room left for the A/C compressor?

Looks like it has the bigger tranny, can barely see the dip stick when the pic is enlarged. That would make it around a 1959 since it has the side throttle. Based on that, it should have the higher HP gas engine. The serial number tag will tell the story unless the engine block was swapped out at so...

Lavoy, Great points, and again I am sure that we will not blow one up from just running at lower RPM's. With that said, the very nature of these is to run at a higher RPM to be efficient with the scavenging process. Also, the oil pressure is directly related to the RPM. I have an original JD 440 ICD...

In respect for a healthy debate, not a dispute, I will weight in on what an 86 year old DD mechanic shared with me. He said that the 2-53, just like the other DD's, is built for one speed - wide open . It is balanced for that speed. Can it be run without "blowing up" at lower speeds? Sure. The probl...

Lavoy, You know what they say about opinions and advice? LOL I would stay with S 35 if the pistons are S. No way to actually know which they are unless the head is pulled or you know the guy that rebuilt it. If it starts real hard but the compression is still decent, my bet is they are S pistons. Re...

They took the basic GM 2-53 and made a few JD parts so that it would work in the 440 C frame. It is a detuned version, with 35 MM injectors. JD did not even offer a tach, only an hour meter. Everything to add a tach is there, all they had to do was offer it as an option but for some reason chose not...

Lavoy, Hard to recall but I believe the inlet pipe is a JD part. DD did not have it is only for the 440 ICD. It will be luck to find one with the correct ID on both ends, a 90 angle, and the correct length. Also, it has to be thick enough to not collapse with the vacuum pulled by the blower against ...

If back firing, it is a lean condition. If sluggish and black smoke, it is a rich condition. These are true provided the rest of the engine is tuned and set properly. Back firing can be caused by bad timing, bad spark plugs, etc. The valves can also create issues that appear to be carb related but a...
