Re: 1951 MC crawler ignition question...
New battery cables? Did you the heavier 6V cables or just regular 12 v cables. You can get a voltage drop with the lighter cables

Re: 420c float
My 40c has a float position. You have to remove the float screw cap on the control valve, and set the float screw in the float position (in cap, off seat). Also you have to remove the pin connecting the control lever to the control valve and turn the piston so that the indexing pin is up. Full descr...

Re: 420 C, No Oil To Top
Lavoy is probably right. I certainly wouldn't bet against him. Thanks for keeping us updated Jack and let us know what you eventually find. We all learn from the collective experience. Also, thanks to Lavoy for establishing and maintaining this great forum. I was a newbie when I bought my 40c severa...

Re: Transmission issue
I was lucky to have a good used one from a bunch of parts I bought from a guy one time so I didn't have to look any further. Lavoy may be able to help or maybe a good machinist could fix the old one.

Re: Transmission issue
Yeah, a weak pressure plate would not cause what you described. It would have to something more catastrophic like the hub breaking out of the clutch disc or ? I would pull the motor and then if you don't see anything in the clutch area try to turn the propeller shaft with the trans in gear. If you c...

Re: Transmission issue
I would pull the transmission cover and see if there is anything obvious. If not, I would suspect the propeller shaft that runs from the clutch to the transmission. The internal spline on this shaft where it connects to the transmission was worn down to almost a knife edge when I pulled mine apart. ...

Re: 420 C, No Oil To Top
Hi Jack, I think it is the same as my Model 40. If so, someone may have put the wrong rear stud in the rocker arm assembly. The rear stud has a flat on it to carry oil from the passage in the head, fed by the outside oil line, to the rocker shaft. If a previous owner had the head/rocker shaft off, h...

Re: Alternator or Generator
Another vote for 6v original. My 40c had been converted to 12v when I got it and had a broken nose cone on the starter. I found a used nose cone and generator and went back to 6v. Never a problem even after motor was rebuilt and a little stiff. Usually starts on 1st or 2nd turn. My son-in-law has an...

Re: My 2010JD 1962 model crawler
Just my 2 cents worth. I have a 40c that I "'rescued" from under an apple tree. Engine was frozen, one rear axle gear missing, and lots of little stuff wrong or missing. It now runs and pulls logs that I cut clearing a bit of land between my house and the river to improve the view. I probably could ...

Re: Which is better 40c 0r 420c final drive housing
According to my 40c parts manual, the M2361T is on the later 40c, serial 62264-up. Other part/casting numbers listed for this machine are AM3368T, M3687T, AM2132T and AM3225T. I assume these are all variations of the same hosing. The early 40 lists part/casting numbers AM909T, M938T and AM1002T. I a...

Re: 40c clutch ajusted but
I think there should be a key to hold the clutch pedal in proper alignment to the shaft. Hard to maintain alignment with just the bolt. If the key is there, make sure it or the groove are not worn a lot.

Re: 40c clutch ajusted but
I had a similar problem when I replaced the engine clutch on my 40c. Too much free play and clutch wouldn't completely disengage. Removed the engine, adjusted the clutch fingers with the JD tool and repaired wear on the throw-out bearing carrier and that solved my problem.

If Lavoy doesn't have a lead on anything or you can't find something closer try Ted at https://www.rsdiertractorparts.com/ He parts out early John Deere stuff and I have found him good to deal with. The website lists the 1010 in units that they are currently parting out.

Thanks Lavoy for the quick response. I'll just get the 5/8" bolts
