I thought it was a good deal since I wouldn't have to cut up the 420 sprockets and intermix it with the 350 teeth. for those prices I think it's foolish to ever pin and bush a older chain.

Lavoy, I contacted the Pittsburgh area office about a month ago looking for pricing on tracks and pads for my 5 roller 420. they had 2 bolt chain with the same pin spacing, around 6", going off of memory, and they was aware of the model and year of my crawler. they gave me a price of 1600.00 for new...

contact http://www.industrialtractorparts.com/ they should have new aftermarket chain for your crawler. they even had 2 bolt chain for my 420. this will save you from going to a 350 upgrade.

Yes, I agree that doing pins and bushings is very dangerous. I found a company that would sell you a complete chain w/14" shoes for about the price of the pins and bushings from john deere, even with finding/buying new sprockets it's still less than pins and bushings from Deere. I haven't made the p...

I 100% agree with you on the service manual. I learned the hard way by not having the manual when I ripped my finals apart the 1st. time! I would never attempt it without having one. There's alot of important setup information that need to happen during re-asssembly.

Did anyone ever change a 4 speed into a 5 speed?

I picked up a parts crawler the other day which I believe it is a 1957 JD 420, to have some spare parts on the shelf for my 56’ 420. Going thru most of the parts crawler is the same as mine, which I knew it would be, but except for the transmission which it is a 5 speed. All of the gears are pretty ...

After tearing the final drive apart it turned out to be that the spacer/washer was in the wrong place and there was improper preload on the bearings. I'll never make that mistake again!

Re: 420 hyd info

The Service manual states 900-950 psi at 9 gpm. I purchased a standard high pressure directional control valve and plumbed a inline poppet pressure relieve valve before the valve body. Baileynet.com part number 222-785. I did all of this when I made a 3 way blade for my 420.

It definitely had me puzzled. I should be putting everything back together this weekend, if time permits. I'll look at the washer and stud depth. I did notice that the bull gear was only wearing on the stud that is toward the front of the machine, the rear is untouched. Which is making me think the ...

Bull gear wearing on the final drive metal stud question.

Has anyone seen where the inside of the bull gear(facing the seat) wear on the 2 steel studs that are molded into the final drive housing? My bull gear was offset from the pinion gear about 1/8”. Does anyone know how much distance is usually in-between the studs and the bull gear? All of the wear is...
