Re: 420C Sediment bowl
Update: Thanks to everyone for their comments to my post. It seems when I was looking up into the sediment bowl housing with a flashlight, I was seeing the clean area on the rubber gasket where the bowl seated, which looked narrower because the rest of it was dingy from nasty fuel in the bowl. I put...

Re: Valve spring compression weight 440ic
I think you are probably correct on the valve spring compression value for your machine. My 420 manual says 30 lbs at 2 inches, and 62 lbs at 1 5/8 inches. These do say minimum. I think I would get some other springs, as shimming closes the gap in the coils, and you don't want to bend a push rod or ...

The L886T gasket that's in the parts diagram is cork, and about 2" OD and 1.5" ID.fundytides wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 12:29 pmMy 40c has the screen and square type ring that you described. It shows in my parts catalog as L886T gasket. Might be available from Lavoy or local JD dealer.
Can't see any square ring listed.

Re: 420C Sediment bowl
Gasket is like a washer like you describe. I have gaskets, washers, or complete assemblies on hand. Lavoy Thanks Is it like a rubber o-ring with a square cross section? All I saw in your catalog was the screen and the cork type washer about 2" OD and 1.5" ID. It's possible mine is from a different ...

420C Sediment bowl
I just removed the sediment bowl off of my dozer, and there wasn't a screen. The only gasket that I can see is what looks like a square ring that sets up in a groove. The replacement screens and gasket sets that seem to be available, have a cork type gasket that seems to be about 1/4" wide. I don't ...

Shifter guide gasket
Does anyone know if there's a gasket under the 5 speed shifter guide, on a 420c. My 1957 crawler looks like there could be one, but the parts diagram doesn't show any. I just wanted to know before I removed the guide to install the new shifter. The guide seems to be stuck on pretty tight, and I may ...

Re: blade wont lift
The pump is supposed to be self priming according to the repair manual. When you accuate the lever, oil pressure opens a check valve and allows oil to flow on that line to the cylinder, and return oil from the cylinder flows back on the other line through the valve and into the tank. When the engine...

Re: Manuals needed for a 420C?
I have the operator's manual from these guys. It's a reproduction of the factory one. They also have a service manual that includes the information that is referenced to from the 40 manual. It is 720 pages and I think that will be my next manual. JD's site lists the parts with numbers, it's just a l...

Re: Idler spring length
Thank you.
I'm thinking of using some threaded rod to replace the existing bolts. I was going to weld a nut on one end to make a bolt. Thats only if the existing ones give me trouble. I keep putting the juice to the nuts, hoping they will move when I attempt to loosen them.

Idler spring length
Hi,
I'm getting ready to adjust the tracks on my 420C. I'd it gives me trouble I'm thinking of replacing the threaded rod and nuts.
If I change the rod and nuts, what is the preloaded length of the spring set to?
Thanks, Pete
