I think you are probably correct on the valve spring compression value for your machine. My 420 manual says 30 lbs at 2 inches, and 62 lbs at 1 5/8 inches. These do say minimum. My 40c has the screen and square type ring that you described. It shows in my parts catalog as L886T gasket. Might be available from Lavoy or local JD dealer.

The L886T gasket that's in the parts diagram is cork, and about 2" OD and 1.5" ID.
Can't see any square ring listed.

I'm thinking of using some threaded rod to replace the existing bolts. I was going to weld a nut on one end to make a bolt. Thats only if the existing ones give me trouble. I keep putting the juice to the nuts, hoping they will move when I attempt to loosen them.

I'm getting ready to adjust the tracks on my 420C. I'd it gives me trouble I'm thinking of replacing the threaded rod and nuts.
