Re: jd420 pics

Good to hear you are still working on your project. You are ok with the rotor pointing at #1 when the flywheel is at TDC, that is the static timing, which should be right to get it started. Instead of the manual saying you should see x number of degrees advance at high idle (when using a timing ligh...

Re: 420c carb & roller grease questions

The pressure washing likely got some moisture inside the distributor. Not uncommon for a running engine not to start after a bath. Check that and dry it out of it is we inside.

Re: 420c carb & roller grease questions

A web search for WMD6 (stamped in the ID plate) is a Wagner loader model. The 40C would indicate it was specified for a 40C. Wagner had mountings and modifications to fit their models to various machines. Ford tractors were big users of Wagner loaders. The N Tractor Club library has a WMD6 manual, l...

Re: Looking to purchase a 450c and sell 555a

The ring around the adjuster is part of the spring from the looks of the parts catalog drawing. I don't know if it is setting just right, but don't think it or that you backed the brake off, is your problem. Here is a link to the page and you can see the loop on the spring (item key # 5). https://pa...

Re: JD400G major hydraulic leak

Welcome to the boards. Depending on the size of the areas needing repair and skill levels available some have patched those hard lines by brazing or welding. Replacing with a hydraulic hose is a commonly practiced option. If replacing with a hose, you need to keep the hose ID the same or a bit large...

Re: 420c carb & roller grease questions

TSX 641 should use a (Standard Motor Products) Hy Grade # 1305 basic carb kit. Any parts store that carries SMP parts should be able to get that kit or get one in the brand they carry using your carb number. Do you have torch tip clears or small wires to clean passages with? It is best to run someth...

Re: Looking to purchase a 450c and sell 555a

You could try backing the self-adjuster off. If the lever stop bolt wasn't set right the lever could have stroked too far, allowing the self-adjuster to over tighten the brake. If backing it off helps, I would suggest backing it off enough to do the complete steering system adjustment by the manual.

Re: Looking to purchase a 450c and sell 555a

I don't have a 450C manual so I can't see how that one is worded. I agree they can be a bit hard to follow at times. One has to remember these manuals are written for JD mechanics (not the DIY market) who have training along with experience on these and similar machines. I have access to a 450B (dry...

Re: 420c carb & roller grease questions

As I suspected, it is a TSX 641. The 6 is visible in your picture. The 1 56 is a reference to the carburetor's build date. Pictures taken at different angles often help with reading "faded" numbers. The 6 appears to have been lightly stamped compared to the others. A bit of light rubbing with some S...

Re: 420c carb & roller grease questions

Can you post a picture of the tag? What is the length of the bowl gasket? 4-1/4", 5", or 5-3/16". It appears the TSX 641 has 2-11/16" mounting stud centers and the TSX 156 has 2-5/16 stud centers. It doesn't appear the two use the same kit so it would be best to try to confirm which it actually has ...

Re: What oil for 555a engine?

If the Harbor Freight gauge is correct and matches the reading of the crawler's gauge, oil pressure is low. If this had an engine rebuild 200 hours ago and oil pressure is way below the spec, something related to the rebuild could be suspect.

Re: Looking to purchase a 450c and sell 555a

As for the steering. If it is a C series it has wet clutches. Most of the adjustments are to the steering valves, not like dry clutch machines. The brakes are self-adjusting. The adjustment procedures for both are in the technical manual. It not a just turn this adjustment. The transmission and stee...

How much do you run it? Possibly a valve(s) sticking from setting?

Re: What oil for 555a engine?

15W40 should be fine. If the oil pressure can't be held with 15W40, using heavier oil to raise pressure only hides the problem for a time, at best. JMHO. I would start by confirming that your current gauge is correct. You need a gauge known to be accurate (often called a master gauge) to check the o...
