Luckily these pictures are from a parts crawler that I just bought. Years of pushing out manure from the barn took their toll. I did get a good engine, transmission, and direction reverser in the deal, AND no need to rebuild the undercarriage! :D

You mentioned using a straight edge on the good part of the rails. It appears to me that the original rails step in at each side in the area where the front idler runs. My best guess is that they were originally 10 1/4" between outside edges. Of course with wear on the original idler brackets things...

The original rails were not special steel but I don't know what I would recommend for a replacement. I love John Deere designs. On both their ag and commercial tractors they usually do a great job. This rail design is certainly not their finest hour. I do not know why the rail extensions are not rep...

Unless you are very, very lucky you will not find rails that are in excellent condition. Even if you do you will have to remove and install the rails and relocate all the rollers etc. A lot of work. I personally would recommend cutting out a rectangular section of the top rail edge and welding in a ...

Is any of your resistance being caused by the brakes instead of the clutch? If you think it could be, loosen the slotted nut on the brake band until it is very loose. Then pull your steering lever. The throw out bearing should contact the pressure plate arms almost immediately and then start pushing...

JD440 front idler and rail clearances and specifications?

I have the tracks off of my JD440ICD and I wanted to touch up the front rails so that the idler wheels would run true. I started building up a weld on the rail edges but I don't know what clearance is specified between the rail and the idler bracket guide. Also since there is wear on the guide, I am...

If your rollers look something like this, it is probably time to rebuild them.

Of the 70 or 80 some JD440 rollers that I have, I don't remember any that are broken around the mounting hole. This is with the factory size bolts, but it leads me to believe that this is not a common area of weakness; and some of these rollers have been unmercifully abused. Regardless of the direct...

To check what you really have in there; plug up the bleed hole under the adjuster (toward the ground). On the top side of the adjuster, remove the cover bolt and remove the set screw further down in that same hole with an allen wrench. Then if you pump some grease into the grease fitting, it should ...

I agree with Lavoy, street pads, also called snow pads, will work as well as rubber on grass. Either will tear up the sod if you brake one side completely and turn sharply. Try to keep both tracks moving and make sweeping turns. As far as crossing your driveway, I keep two or four sheets of old roof...

JD440ICD transmission to direction reverser alignment

On the diesel JD440 transmission the top two bolts mating to the direction reverser are surrounded by an alignment washer or hollow dowel. The part number shown is T11407T. This is a straight hollow dowel only about 4/10 th of an inch long. However, my diesel crawler requires a stepped down dowel, b...

Once you get the piston out, if you cannot pump it apart with a grease gun, try pushing it in instead. First clean the rod where it will go into the barrel. Then put it in a 10 or 20 ton press. Be sure to open the relief value! Then see if you can press it in to move just a little to break the greas...

How are you guys coming on the seal tool? I sure would be interested in buying one once you get the fabrication issues worked out.
