Clutches - Adjustment

I was able to talk the local Deere dealer into letting me borrow the JD7 tool. I've assembled the clutch packs and adjusted the clutch finger height as per the tool and the instructions elsewhere on this site. I assembled the finals into the housings and attempted to adjust the clutch and brake per ...

clutch adjustment tool/gauge needed

hello, I'm in need of the clutch adjustment gauge/tool for properly setting up the steering clutches. Lavoy has indicated he is currently out of stock of these(as of last week), and I'm trying to finish up assembly this weekend. Is there anyone out there who knows where else to get one? OR could loa...

I'm fairly certain I know where the metal came from. At some point in the crawlers life someone bypassed the hydraulic tank and used the hydraulic oil from the reverser for auxiliary system. They put a 'tee' in the drain plug of the reverser and used the return at the reverser oil cooler. When the r...

Hydraulic pump

Found the cause of the broken hyd pump shaft. A piece of metal got in there and jammed up the gears. I added a couple photos to the earlier photobucket link(located a few posts up). I'm adding a filter on the suction side of the pump to avoid this from happening again.

Hydraulic pump

I worked this afternoon putting my project 1010 back together. I knew I had hydraulic issues so I pulled the pump off the bracket and took a look. The shaft was sheared right off, so that's why the previous owner said they had no hydraulics. The only way I know a pump will shear a shaft is too much ...

Lavoy,

I fully agree with you at this point, but some of us have to see it for ourselves. I'm just glad I listened to everyone and mimicked the use the clutch through heat and could visibly see the oil come to the surface of the clutch plate.

Oil in clutch disks

Ok, reading through multiple posts about oily clutch disks and speaking to Lavoy today about them, I thought I'd see the problem for myself. I had disks that I thought might have oil on them and convinced myself I could save them like all us mechanics have saved countless other parts. Last week I so...

Lavoy, can you please PM price to ship a final to 17701? Also, is it complete and known to have good internals? I have found a late casting to fit my late gears and shaft, but it's cracked around 2 bolt holes. I think usable, but not the best option. The other issue I have is the axle shafts are wor...

Late shaft will not work in early casting due to bearing race placement. With early casting, race is cone pointing in, with late casting race is cone pointing out for the final drive gear shaft bearings. I'll have to re figure my plans with this final drive. It'll either be welding up a casting, sen...

Into the final drives

Thanks for the advice so far. Im getting a good list around for my final parts orders for different items. I'm now into my final drives. I have 1 pretty good one and 1 that needs a bunch of help. I have an original casting from my 1010 with the large shaft in the gear that has 2 bolts in the back of...

Misc. Items

I'm to where I'm working on some of the misc. items and would like some advice/help on a few odd ball things: I ended up with a parts machine that had some decent steering clutch plates in it. The one side was simply a bit rusty from moisture. I pulled them apart, cleaned up with a wire brush and am...

Started on the transmission tonight. Set the preload on the rear ring gear per the book. Gonna work on power shaft and output shaft tomorrow. The input shaft is out to the machine shop to get the roller bearing journal turned down and sleeved back to the 2.000" factory spec. Should have it back earl...

Reverser update

I finally finished majority of assembly of the reverser tonight. Put air to the 90psi port and spun input shaft by hand, I can feel the clutches engage as I throw the lever from forward to reverse, so I must have done something right! A few last o rings on the rear quills and I can start putting som...

I've found that pulling the cylinder apart and taking the tube/piston to my local hydraulic shop to have the seals measured and supplied is the best option. I just ordered seals in this fashion for the cylinders on an old John Deere skid steer, all seals/gaskets were $24 per cylinder. John Deere was...
