Re: No. 61 Bulldozer?
Thanks Lavoy. Never thought of that. I guess it is a 61 and just needs some TLC to take the slop out of the joints, line things up properly and perhaps weld in the X reinforcements.

No. 61 Bulldozer?
When I acquired my 40c, it had what I have always assumed was a No. 61 bulldozer on it. However, I recently decided to take a look at overhauling it in an attempt to get some of the slop out of the frames. As I started to investigate, I found some differences from what is shown in the parts sheets f...

Re: Jd 440 barn find
I picked up a 40c that had been sitting under an apple tree for years with the motor seized solid. It rolled free, I just had to lift the blade and chain it up. Your experience may vary!

Re: Engine Clutch
You are right Stan. My 40 does this too. I have played with older vehicles with non-synchro transmissions all my life and I guess I have just taken this characteristic for granted and pausing a few seconds before engaging low gear became "second nature", something like the pause between low and 2nd ...

Re: Engine Clutch
Not to nit pick but your description is a little confusing. When you push the pedal in the clutch should be dis-engaged, when you let the pedal out, the clutch should engage. That aside, before you tear things apart, are you sure that your idle speed is not too high? This can make the time lag betwe...

Re: JD 420c crawler
I have had this happen a few times with my 40c before I finally took it apart and fixed the problem(s). The following is a summary of my experience. Others may vary. The track coming off is usually the result of one or more of the following factors plus interference from an immovable object (rock, s...

Re: Oil pressure switch
Your mechanical oil pressure gauge was probably originally threaded directly into the oil filter base. Someone may have preferred to have it closer to the operator and installed the line to hook it up. Should work ok either way.

Re: 40c distributor
I agree with Stan. My 40c retains original 6v electrical system, is used only infrequently, and generally starts on the first turn or 2 even after sitting for a few weeks or so. My son in law has the same experience with his MC.

Re: 420C Sediment bowl
My 40c has the screen and square type ring that you described. It shows in my parts catalog as L886T gasket. Might be available from Lavoy or local JD dealer.

Re: neats foot foot powder
Similar story about cone clutches in 1920's Chevs. A guy I worked with says he can remember his father stopping by the side of the road, taking the clutch cover off and throwing in a handful of fine sand when the clutch started slipping on hills. Seemed to work for a while. I guess anything that wil...

Re: Fender Drawing
Hi Bill, I have an original set of fenders on my 40c. I can take a couple of pictures and send them along with measurements. I would need your email. Do you have the brackets or do you need detail on those as well? I don't know how to add measurements to the pics but I can provide them separately. L...

Re: Jd40 cylinder head
M1768T is the casting number for a JD40 head while M56T is the casting number for a JD M head. There must be a difference but I have used the M head on a 40 and haven't had a problem. I am sure Lavoy would know the difference

Re: 1951 MC crawler ignition question...
Looks like a fun project. Some of the same stuff I went through with my 4 roller crawler when I rescued it from under a tree with a seized motor. Had to do a motor rebuild along with all the usual stuff in the finals. You say in your video that it doesn't show any oil pressure. If removing the gauge...

Re: Jd40 cylinder head
As you probably know, these are susceptible to cracking. I have had 2 crack (had them repaired) and my son-in-law had one crack on a 40. Next time, I will buy a new one. They are probably available from Lavoy.
