About those 420 hydraulic cylinders...
So I got out and picked up my cylinders from the big time industrial hydraulic place. Nice guys, no charge for tearing them apart and evaluating the cylinders. Took a look at them this AM. The guy said they were badly pitted and scored, not worth messing with. I have no clue what he's talking about!...

Re: Icy Hydraulics
I've gone through this on my 40 and 420. I think it's condensation mostly. I ended up pulling the tanks on mine in both cases and draining them and then rinsing with diesel. That won't get all the milky oil out but it gets most of it. My machines don't have sheds most of the time. Good idea to let i...

Re: Aw nuts! Blade cylinders
Thanks Jim, I'll talk to them. Theres another place I can go that's slower than death but they are more of a farmer-type repair place. They may be able to help.

Re: Aw nuts! Blade cylinders
The barrels are just steel tubing, right? I took it to a regular industrial hydraulic repair service near our local big city/army base (Watertown/Adams NY). They me be the kind of place that isn't much into redneck/make it do repairs. That might have been a mistake?

Inside arms, 2 cylinders, manual swing to right and left. Cylinders are tie rod type.

Re: Aw nuts! Blade cylinders
Lavoy, my bad, I forgot it does angle side to side but not horizontally. I'm sure it's a JD blade.

Re: Aw nuts! Blade cylinders
Not sure on blade model Lavoy. 2 cylinders, straight blade, inside mount. What is so special about the JD cylinders? Stroke?

Aw nuts! Blade cylinders
Finally got the 420 blade cylinders out to the hydraulic shop (70 miles one way). Long story short, they're trashed. Shop says it looks like there was a lot of water in them for many years. Scored and pitted bad. Initial estimate for a "cheap" honing and rebuild with ZERO assurance they won't leak a...

Re: 40C vs 420C hyd pump
Is there a rebuild kit available for the cylinders from Deere or elsewhere? I'm not finding anything in a quick search.

Re: 40C vs 420C hyd pump
Thanks Lavoy, I know the cylinders weep oil from the front seals so they probably need an R+R anyway.
Any thoughts on adding a hyd filter?

Re: 40C vs 420C hyd pump
Thanks guys. The new pump was nice and clean inside. It went in fine. Added new 303 and still have the slow acting when raising blade and it starts dropping as soon as I let off on the control lever. I'm assuming the seals in the control valve are shot. Have the manuals but am going to have to start...

Re: 40C vs 420C hyd pump
Huh. So 303 should be thinner than, say, 20wt? I wonder if the stuff the previous owner had in there (who knows what that junk was) reacted with the 303 I used and gummed up some? I know I changed it a few times due to water in the fluid. Emptied the tank right out twice but still had milky fluid in...

Re: 40C vs 420C hyd pump
I ended up getting a good used pump with proper front section from a guy in California. Took an hour of internet searching, finally looked for front side number M3191T and found it. I was going to rebuild the old pump but one bearing hole was badly wallowed out. Still not sure why it happened or how...
