jim it seems you have a pretty good handle on the forces and stresses involved I left a welding note on your other post My thought - after you tack in place, preheat with a rosebud where you will weld in depth, then heat all your finished welding again with the torch to release any stress and maybe ...

broken welds

I think those parts are weldable Look at the cross section of those 4 bolts The total cross section of your weld must be at least that much which I dont think it is Plus there isnt enough penetration into your base material you need higher heat for your reweld and perhaps grind the joint into a vee ...

You can cob one up using some shims, an appropriate length straight edge, and a machinists rule

I dont remember the measurement but more important is that they are all the same

If one side requires more pull than the other, you might have oil on the brake band in that side. These "Bs" are designed to be dry in the brake-steering clutch housing, but if water gets in from rain or an open bottom, or if the axle shaft seal leaks, it will affect your braking. Also oil on the cl...

Either dirt or grit in your grease, or a nick in the ball or its housing - a manufacturing defect. You might try a post mortem with a big magnifier to see if you just got a bad run. Otherwise any zerk should do.

What Happened?

Good point. Originally I had some incidents where either the drive train didn't engage, or it was locked up when placed in forward or reverse, and finally released with a loud clunk. I thought the transaxle dipstick looked frothy and assumed I had water in it. Due to a mental lapse I didn't realize ...

Case 580 Parts

Thanks all for the suggestions. I may still need them. After the usual searches I ended up accessing the Case national site after selecting a local dealer in Sacramento. You get exploded views of all parts with availability and prices. So far I've bought mostly seals, 4 brake disks, and a 1-2 gear, ...

Case 580 drive train parts sources?

I have the trans-axle removed and will need to replace a couple of transmission gears. I suspect I may also need some shuttle parts as well. Anyone know of any good sources of new or used transmission parts for Case Backhoe-Loaders?

When to replace

I agree with Paul, If you are throwing chains when turning and side hilling Its more about shoulder wear on chains, rollers and idlers. This caused me to replace the chains on the Komatsu. I replaced the chains on the 450C when it had stretched enough that the roller was hitting the top of the nest ...

450 B vs C, clutches, tracks

I've posted a lot about stuck dry clutches, - still haven't fixed my "C" steering clutch issue - search authors - "Jack-the-Ripper" Its probably easier and cheaper to repair clutches, particularly the dry ones, than to rebuild tracks. I don't think you will have "wrenching" issues with these machine...

Track Parts Idaho

When I lived in Sandpoint, ID I bought three sets of track rails, two for my 450s and one for my Komatsu excavator, from "Trackman" in Spokane, 713 N, Cook, 509 535-1661 They also got rollers, bearings, cylinder seals, sprockets, etc. for me, all at reasonable prices with very friendly personal serv...

How do I haul...

I have a 13,000 lb JD450, 18,000 lb case 580, and 28,000 lb excavator. I had to go to a tandem axle 43,000 gvw tilt trailer. I used to pull them with a 10 wheel dump (22,000 lbs) and now use a 37,000 lb gvw heavy duty 6 wheel dump that weighs 15,000 lbs. With the air brakes on the trailer I never fe...

I read almost the same thread on this site a few years ago - deja vu.
A tow company with a roll-back flatbed is a convenient alternative.

The perfect dozer

I like my 450s. I bought a 450c for $13,000 and used it for about 5 years building a road on my 60 acres of timber land in Idaho, up a shale cliff, not the hardest stone but after that time the undercarriage finally needed replacing. The final straw was the track chain had stretched so much that the...

bolt torque and track wear

I had to use a 1" air impact wrench set on #4 to remove the pad bolts. As I recall I tightened using the 1" again set on #1 setting and maybe 90 psi. I usually stop one or two bangs past the stop of any noticeable rotation. If they loosen, they're easy enough to retighten. I don't think a 1/2" impac...
