Re: Steering throw-out bearing
While you have the FD out, make sure the linkage is still attached to the cam. When the lever is pulled the linkage rotates the cam. Behind the cam are the balls that push the carrier and attached bearing towards the clutch fingers. When the cam is rotated, the balls come out of their sockets, actin...

Re: steering clutch wont disengage
I don't think you want any lubricant in there as you'll contaminate the clutch disc's. Try and see if you can adjust it a little more. I've heard of people having someone pull them around while working the lever. You may have to take it apart and redo the clutch.

I would think that if it's adjusted correctly, it shouldn't matter where in the slot it is.

With the lever back about 1 3/8 inches, the throw out bearing should just touch the clutch fingers.

Re: 420c steering to the right...
Have you pulled the left lever back enough to disengage the left clutch, but not far enough to apply the left brake? This will verify if the right side is driving at all.

I'm not familiar with this machine, but the oil may not look milky until you drain it.
My 420 was a light coffee colored, but when I drained it the oil came out milky.

Re: John Deere 420c steering clutch slipping issues
I think that bolt is to adjust the throw out bearing carrier out to the pressure plate fingers. If you move it all the way in, there shouldn't be any pressure against the fingers. If it's not touching the fingers and it still slipping, maybe the clutch plates didn't get assembled correctly, or you d...

You can look up parts at partscatalog.deere.com, and get the part numbers
for the models you are interested in, and see if they match.

jdparts has the part numbers listed for street pads, but there are different numbers
depending on the width of the track. I think there's 10, 12, and 14 inch widths.

Re: Regulator Grounding
Thanks Lavoy, I didn't think of using my air hammer. Came off in about a minute with no heat. Previous owners put some good dent on the hub trying to remove it. I tried a 3 jaw puller and a 5 lb slide hammer and it didn't budge. My next trip to Harbor Freight I'm returning the bearing puller that I ...

Re: Regulator Grounding
I know it's easier to remove the dash plate, but I can't get that pulled out far enough
until I get the stuck steering wheel off. I saw a video of using a bearing puller to remove
the steering wheel. I picked one up yesterday, and I will try that today.

Re: Regulator Grounding
Thanks for the info everyone. I kind of though it must be grounded somehow, because the DelcoRemy circuit diagram show one end of the shunt coils going to ground. I'd like to remove it to bring with the generator to be setup, but I can't get the steering wheel off. I tried with a puller, and then a ...

Regulator Grounding
Hi,
Does the voltage regulator on my JD 40 tractor need to be grounded? I can't see where it mentions anywhere if it does or doesn't need grounding. Mine is just setting there behind the instrument panel, with the wires holding it in place.
Thanks, Pete

Re: Timing light
Some of the new timing lights have an RPM function. This can be handy for setting slow idle RPM, and fast idle RPM.
I think this is the one I have.
