Nortrac 3500 Anyone ever eyeball one?

Hi, I was surfing about Ye Olde eBay this afternoon, and ran across an auction for a Nortrac 3500. http://cgi.ebay.com/NorTrac-30-HP-bulldozer-dozer-crawler-NB3500C-Paris-IL_W0QQitemZ170106875122QQihZ007QQcategoryZ97121QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Now, I'm not really interested in getting one (actually I'm ...

Hi, I'll second the 420, or even a 440. The 5-roller tracks are much better than the 3 or 4 roller ones if you're really working them. I'd also look for the mod 62 (420) or 63 (440) blade as their much heavier than the earlier models. Heck, if you get lucky, you might even find a 440 with the mod 64...

Hi,

I'm pretty sure that the 1010 used the same oil filter dome as the M, 40, 420, etc...

Hi, No, not a problem at all. I don't know of any old tractor engine design that cared if the gas had lead in it or not. Most of the gas sold until 1960 or so was unleaded, anyway. The addition of Tetraethyl Lead was something that occured in aviation fuel first, and then not until WWII as a standar...

Hi, Yeah, it's a pretty common problem. The sad part is that it doesn't have to be, since it's usually operator error that causes the problems. You simply *have* to have the machine stopped dead *before* moving the reverser lever. The other main source of reverser fault is not keeping the clutch pac...

Hi,

I've seen 440's with the plate over the tilt cylinder. I think it was a late production change on Deere's part. Dad used to make up and add them to machines that came into our shop for service, if they didn't already have them. ;)

Hi, Actually, the car-rebuild guys would have a show where all their tools were busted and the crawler still in one piece at the end! And - the MythBuster guys would run out of explosives before they got anywhere - or, they'd just succeed in tossing the entire machine onto their foot! :P :P :P :P It...

Hi, Yep. Those fiber discs react to water in much the same way as pelletized animal feed or a cardboard box - once it gets wet, it's done for. The steel discs can be fixed as long as they're not warped or too rusty. After cleaning them up, measure them at several points with a micrometer to make sur...

Hi,

Well, now I'll have to take a few pix of my 420. I've not done it because she's not all prettied up. However, she looks a lot like Lavoy's (white stripe and all) so I guess it really doesn't matter. Except, I don't have snow wings and a winch on mine. ;)

Lindemann Question

Hi,

Did the original model-B based Lindemann crawlers use steering clutches and brakes to steer - like the later Deere ones, or did they just use differential braking like some of the other brands (Terratrac, etc)?

I can't seem to locate any references on this point anywhere, and I'm curious.

Hi, I have my dozer all set up for plowing with the gauge shoes on the blade, and all it's had to push all winter is - Composted Mulch. 60+ cu yds of Composted Mulch, which is two semi-dump trailer loads worth to be sure, but only mulch. No snow. And I was looking forward to showing the neighbors ho...

Hi,

Just in case you can't visualise it, the reverser clutch packs look like the ones used in motorcycles and automatic transmissions. :)

Hi, Congratulations! Or, maybe that should be 'condolences', depending on how much work the poor old girl winds up needing! :P I love it when folks post pix of their machines. Hi,

Actually, there's a greater mechanical advantage with a loader for lifting things off the ground. A dozer has the greater advantage when pushing the blade downwards into the ground.

However, as long as you don't blow out the oil seals in the ends of the hyd cylinders, you'll be OK.
