440 ic gas cyl head
My 440 gas is cracked. In looking for new/ different one, I found out they are hard to come by. Mine is M 3995 T casting number. I also hear the later 440 had a slightly higher compression head. What is casting number for this later head? Will a 420-430 cyl head with different casting number than mi...

Re: broken bolt 440 steering clutch collar
I don’t know of any other way to repair that broken bolt. That is why I always put grade 8 bolts, and use neverseize upon assembly, of any bolted together piece. Grade 5 twist off to easy. Good luck!

Re: 440 ic restoration
Thanks for that. Engine had to be done. Was seized, and found out it rolled #2 rod, #-1 was very close.
He had water in base( with oil on top) and so when he checked before starting it had oil on dipstick, but was over full , it didnt run very long and seized, and that’s how I bought it.

440 ic restoration
Starting to get stuff rolling in now for engine. New pistons, rings etc. Crank ( ground- .010 mains, .020 rods) block bored, and the bills are laying on bench, cornarary arrest happening now!!! $$ mount up very quick. Stans comments- there is no cheap crawlers, is absolutely true!! And as you commen...

Re: New OS piston clearance
Yes, you guys are right on the end gap measurements etc. I don’t believe end gap is to critical in our situation, as long gap is not to tight to start with. I believe a post from Lavoy say’s piston’s for a 440- gas, when available are in 3 sizes, with .045” OS., being one size, but rings aren’t avai...

Re: New OS piston clearance
Gregjo, thank you for your comment and insite. You are very right about cast ( softer) and chrome ( harder ) and when rings seat, cyl walls are smooth. Oil consumption, and compression loss, is hopefully at a minimum when walls are smooth. When a cyl wall is honed, it could be (easily) .003” to .005...

Re: New OS piston clearance
Like I said, I can usually get a good discussion going on this topic! No, it was not improper or bad installation of rings, or improper honing. After much and exhausting checking and analyzing the problem, what they found was the metal the liners was made of( cast iron of some kind) was work hardene...

Re: New OS piston clearance
Forgot to include , all of us old mechanics have either heard, or have done it ourselves, that those “dam chrome rings” used a new set and engine kept burning oil, until I removed them and installed a set of cast rings, engine burned oil for a few miles, usually around 500 miles , then engine finall...

Re: New OS piston clearance
Yes, I remove top cyl “ridge” of carbon and metal before removing pistons, is easier and doesn’t break anything. I can usually get a good conversation going when I mention about not honing cylinder walls that are good enough to reuse, without rebore ( rebore has automatic hone, as Lavoy pointed out)...

Re: JD450C third head gasket This is getting old
Can’t get over what a beautiful job you are doing - you are not rebuilding it, you are restoring it( to way better than when it was new) even noticed on the pics of the dash board, all nuts are even orientated the same way( a “sharp” portion is pointing up)
Very very nice.
Very very nice.

Re: New OS piston clearance
Forgot to make it clear that we don’t hone cyl walls, as long as cyl are good to use. Has anyone tryed this?

Re: New OS piston clearance
Absolutely true. That is why I waited until I had new pistons in my hand, but if you take factory specs for reboring on a pre 1955 auto engine, and bore to that( ie- .001” per in of bore- clearance , sometimes find that is too tight. ) I just thought maybe someone on here has found over time that a ...

New OS piston clearance
Have a set of new .040 OS pistons. ( finally found some at a reasonable price) can we use service manual clearance spec as gospel, or has someone found a different spec that is better, when we rebore.
