440 Axel

Post by jac » Tue Nov 01, 2005 7:13 pm

I have finally disassembled my right final drive. Gears are in very good shape. That is a relief. The main seal has worn the axle and created a recess on the axle shaft. It would except some wear but how much is acceptable?

Lavoy: part list sent as PM. Need 14 fiber and 12 metal clutch disks for the clutch kits

A very littlel amount of wear is acceptable, the axle seal is a very tight fit. Another problem is the surface is rough and will eat up the new seal in short order.
Will check my PM's.

OK, thanks. Did a quick measurement of the axle diameter and it looks like the axle is undersize about 0.049" at the seal. Quite a bit of wear.

See if you can find someone that can metal spray. They can cut the axle down, spray it back up and recut to size.

What is the price for a used axle? Just in case. I have also heard about seal repair kits which use thin metal bands over the seal surface. The band is epoxied in place.

I have tried sleeving axles in the past and have not been able to make it work. That is not to say that you could not.
A used axle that has been metal sprayed and remachined is $300. I do not believe I have one done, 2-3 week delay, my machinist is a 50 mile round trip from me.
