Carb for 440IC

Post by Roger440IC » Fri Aug 29, 2008 8:59 pm

Does anyone know if a TSX-756 is the right carb for an early 440IC? I have SM-2024 but the 440 isn't listed. Is there another reference that identifies which carbs go with the 440IC? Thanks, Roger

The parts book I have (JD# PC-573-Dec66) says that 440 gas engines used Marvel-Schebler carburetors # TSX-756, TSX-777 or TSX-768.
The parts breakdown shows early 440's used JD part #AT 10181 T carb.
They define early as before serial # 448000.
Everywhere there is a difference in carb parts they list early, late and early all fuel in that order.
If this order holds true the TSX-756 is the early carb for gas engines.
I tried to get numbers off of my early carb but under all the grease and dirt I found several layers of paint. No numbers visible.
If someone can tell me where the numbers are I will try and see them.
I hope this helps you.
Dave

Roger,
My old I&T shop service book lists the TSX756 For the gas 440 prior to 448001 and the TSX777 for gas 440's after 448000.

Dave,
The numbers on a TSX carb are stamped on a small plate (brass if I remember correctly ) that is riveted on the top surface of the air inlet , above where the choke is.

I found the tag on my carb (Thanks Chuck!).
I have a TSX 756 on my early 440.
There is no way to know for sure but I feel that I have a low hour machine, for it's age and that the carb is original.
If only someone hadn't painted it with a mop.

Dave and Chuck,
Thanks for your replies. It sounds like I have the right carburator even if it doesn't work. I took mine apart and found that its missing the idle jet, probably one of the reasons that it doesn't idle well, and the rebulid kit that I bought doesn't come with any of the replacement jets. At this point I guess I'm in the market for a rebuilt carburator.
Any ideas on where I can find a rebuilt TSX-756 and what they cost? Thanks, Roger

Jets are available, I would replace the jet and try that.

Lavoy, do you have any tricks for removing the economiser jet and the nozzle? I've kept them soaked with Kroil for 3 days and I can't get them to budge. I'm hesitant to use heat or any more brute force for fear of damaging them. Also, the idle jet is missing and the threads in the body are rusted. I'm afraid if I don't clean up the threads with a tap that the jet won't make it to the bottom and seat properly and if I use a tap, that I'll alter the bottom stop. Any thoughts would be apreciated? Do you have any any rebuilt carburators or jets? Thanks, Roger

From my Minne-Moline side I keep hearing that Motec Engeneering is a good carb rebuilder and parts source. Several of the gas M-Ms use M/S carbs. His complete contact info is.

Roger,
I heat around the jet and try to remove it. I use a gunsmithing screwdiver that I have shortened the tip on, it works better than a regular screwdriver. If all else fails, I drill the jet out, and pick out the pieces with a dental pick. You can tap the threads without hurting anything.
I have no 440 carbs ued, new aftermarket are available, but are spendy.
