440IC Reverser-------HELP!!!

Post by silvertip253 » Wed Jan 07, 2009 9:30 pm

Hi, Just bought a 440 crawler to push snow with but after a few Hours of running, while In reverse gear- has a five speed trans with reverse and a direction reverser. I was not using the reverser, it was in forward as I was backing up there was a clattering sound, I pushed in the clutch. Now as long as I have the main clutch in the engine runs. When I try to ingage the clutch it will either slip or stall the engine. Checked the trans and found nothing wrong. I can pull the machine as long as the trans is in neutral. Seems there is somthing locked up in the reverser portion of the machine. Anyone able to tell me how hard it is to find parts and what kind of $. Also tear down Procedure? Thanks

Could also be the input shaft bearing, but I would not rule the reverser out. Get a parts and service manual if you do not already have them, you will need them. Only way to service the reverser is to remove it from the crawler. You can pull the shifter cover off, that may allow you to see if something is damaged.

Thank-you for the Info. I have started to tear the machine down starting at the rad. Can I separate the machine behind the clutch housing or do I have to separate it at the bell housing first? Thanks Lyle

Split it at the bellhousing first, it will be easier in the long run.
