440 IC Backfire?

I was doing some work with my 440, taking out some stumps and moving a little dirt when it started acting like it was running low on fuel. It was getting low so I refilled the tank and ran for about 5 min. when it started acting up again. Now I can start it and it will run for a minute or so and then starts backfireing through the carb, until it finally shuts off. I let it sit about 30 sec to 1 min and it starts and runs again for another couple mins.
Does this sound like it is flooding out to any one?

I took the carb off and blew everything out with air, reinstalled it and it still does it. Any suggestions??????????????

To me it sounds like it is starving for fuel, not flooding out.

It sounds like you ran the fuel tank so low that you mobilized some sediment or rust that has now plugged your fuel filter or strainers on the fuel tank or carb inlet. Since I don't know 440s well, someone else will have to be more specific about exactly where to check.

You have the exit bung on the gas tank, the passages in the metal part of the glass sediment bowl, any inline filter that may be installed and the wire screen filter that is inside the carb inlet. Even though you "blew it out" with air, you aught to pull the jets and clean it very thoroughly. It only takes one speck of rust to make a big difference.
On the rebuild kit I got from Lavoy the new throttle shaft and felt seals made a world of difference in the way mine ran. I could actually adjust it afterwords.

Pull the sediment bowl off, turn the fuel on, and make sure you have flow there. The MC died on my twice now down in the bottom of the ditch because a piece of rust plugged the inlet to the sediment bowl. If you have no flow, you can pull the shut off valve out of the side of the sediment bowl, and GENTLY blow in the hole with an air gun. Remove the gas cap prior to doing this.

All the above responses could be true, but I think you may have an electrical problem. I would check your battery ground, then clean the terminals on your battery, then take off the distributor cap and be sure the points are clean and no wires are loose or shorting out on the distributor, the ignition switch, or the coil.
