440 crawler steering clutch

Post by old-larry » Tue Feb 17, 2009 7:15 pm

Hi All I bought the crawler that I brought up here before. The final drive is fine. The steering clutch is rusty inside. The very inside fiber disk is stripped. The other disks are not. My question is...Am I missing something? It seems to me that the track should still drive with only one disk stripped.
Any feedback is a big help. Thanks Larry

Yes it should if there is still pressure from the pressure plate. If the springs are all rusted and shot, maybe not. Also make sure you have freeplay in the clutch.

Thanks Lavoy,

With the pressure plate on the bench it's easy to tell that two of the fingers are easier to push that the other one. Looks like I will be ordering some parts soon.
