I JUST REBUILT A 2-53 FOR MY 440ICD. MINE ALSO WOULD REV LIKE IT WAS GOING TO BLOW, MINE HAD ALOT OF OIL BLOWBY AND I THOUHT I HAD A BROKE RING ONLY TO FIND TAHT MY CYLINDER HEAD WAS CRACKED. I HAVE FOUND A PLACE IN HOUSTON THAT HAS 4 NEW SURPLUS CYLINDER HEADS FOR THE 2-53,I WILL HAVE TO LOCATE THE NUMBER. THIS MAY NOT BE THE SAME PROBLEM ,BUT IT HAS SOLVED MINE FROM THE VERY HIGH REV. I had a diesel truck that did the same thing once.
Turns out it was sucking air not fuel.
Filled the tank, purged the air and never let the tank get that low again.
No more problem.

There is something else about these engines that I have been told will also make them runaway. The only way to shut them down would be to close off the air intake. Seems like a seal or gasket blew out and it would start burning the oil in the crankcase, which is why the throttle lever is useless in trying to shut it down.
The later engines have a butter fly air shut off for that purpose, from what I am told.
Someone on here will know the details of this.

I believe you are referring to the blower seal- here is some info on it from previous threads:

There is an update on the blower seals, the conversion needs to be done by a Detroit shop, they have do something to the housing I believe, and there is a special tool required.
