Want a crawler - having trouble

Post by satch » Fri Sep 11, 2009 9:43 am

Hello all,

I am trying to find a 420, 430 or 440 gas crawler. On my wish list, 5 roller (has to have), reverser (like to have), loader (has to have), winch (has to have) log arch (like to have) and at least 12 inch tracks. I am looking for one in pretty good condition - not a fixer upper. And, of course, I want all of this at the right price and reasonably close to home!

So, I can find loaders with no winch or dozers with a winch, but I am having real trouble finding a loader with a winch. I realize I can add it after, but it seems to be really expensive to add later.

Am I being unrealistic to think I can find a loader with a winch? If I do find one, the chances of the price being right can hinder me. Whereas I can find many loaders without a winch. Any comments?

Most on here know more than me about these and how they were configured, but it just seems to me that a crawler with a loader would need and have the weight stack on the rear to offset the potential front loads. I could be wrong, and it could be that a winch would do about the same thing.
Good luck on finding the one you like.

I am not sure how rare a 440 loader with a winch is,but I have seen jd 350's with foresty packages from time to time, loader 4n1 bucket,ROPS with cage, winch, log arch.
they make a great little machine to bump around in the woods with.

OK, I am almost giving up finding a loader with a winch. If I should buy a loader, how hard is it to find a good winch to buy?
Is it any easy add-on to add the winch later?
What models of winch would work?
Thanks to everyone for all of their help.

The catch may be a "good" winch. Finding a winch will be a little difficult, finding a good one will be difficult at best. You would probably be better off making the assumption that you will be doing some work on the winch. As to finding an arch, somewhere way past difficult at best, that will be a luck shot if at all.
As to winches on loaders, yes you will find them on occasion, (referencing two cylinder here, not 350 and later), but not often. You will lose some lift capacity with a winch as it is lighter than the weight rack.

Thanks for all of the help guys.

What about an aftermarket electric winch? Like http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RECON-17 ... ccessories

Could I fasten this on the back of a crawler and use successfully?

Any other comments?

winch

satch,
The electric winch you highlighted is primarily for self recovery on
wheeled vehicles. It would work on a crawler but you would need a
very large battery to power it.The motors get real hot with extended
use. I don't think the unit would hold up to skidding logs if that
is what you had in mind, but that is just my opinion.A pto winch can
be run all day long and you won't have to worry about a battery
dying at the worst possible moment.JimAnderson

I know this is a blanket statement, but pretty much ANY 12 volt winch is a limited use item. I would be willing to bet that a two cylinder crawler with good traction would break that winch in two. Keep in mind that an 8A/8G Gearmatic winch is rated at about one half the pull of the Ebay winch, but weighs 3-4 times a much. The ring and pinion on these winches is almost the size of a two ton truck ring and pinion.
If you want to pull a couple smaller logs a short distance a few times a year and are very careful, you will likely be fine. If you are doing any more than that, I would not even consider it.

Mile Marker produces or produced a line of hydraulic powered winches, you may want to look into them. They were designed to operate off auto/truck power steering systems. They may not last any longer than an electric winch but they would be a lot less strain on your electrical system, just operate a couple of electro/hydraulic valves.

I thought this was an informative post on how to mount an electric winch to a crawler:

Farmboy, if you are still visiting this site it would be noce to get an update on how yours is holding up.

that dang winch

Post by pop pop » Mon Sep 21, 2009 7:15 pm

i would avoid an electric winch like it was the plague., as i went that route and on the first attempt at getting the unit up a steep bank~20ft. i ran the motor outa gas due to the incline,, relied on the battery, and winch ran the batery dead before it got to the top, got a second battery and it finished the job but ran it weak, went a few inches at a time, took half the day it seemed,, just enough between the 2 ta get the unit started once on the flat,, those winches will suck more amps than you can give when under full load. managed to pull loose the only ceder tree that i wanted to keep by tying a big hand winch into the mess to assist...
so the only thing i will use that electric winch for again is to load test the battery,ha. dang thing@#$@##$&... i wish the guy from the red/green show wouldv'e been there to "properly place" a few sticks of dynamite..
