Lavoy, Do you know if a pinion gear from a 350 would fit? There's one on &pay that has 13 teeth.

No, they are different. That gear is unique to only very late gas 440's.

Ok, I've got both side completely apart down to the rear differential.
I'm replaceing the seals in the left and right quills, but I've got a question.
Which way do the seals go in?

The service manual says "If oil seal in quill is worn or damaged, install a
new one with lip to inside of quill."

The old seals were installed in reverse of what I would expect. By that I mean....the seals I have (and most I've seen) have a garter type spring on what I would call the "wet" side of the seal. When the oil or fluid heats up, it expand a little and would push the lip tighter to the shaft. The way the old seals were installed, they would have kept dirt out of the differentail, but would have done nothing in the way of keeping the oil in the diff.

I guess my question is, which way is the "lip" per the manual, garter spring towards the differential, or towards the clutch?
If it helps, I'm pretty sure these seals HAVE been replaced before and may have been installed incorrectly.

The lip should hold the oil in, someone has installed them wrong at one time.
