Reverser oil level

Post by cdunn » Tue Feb 16, 2010 9:50 pm

On a 420 with a reverser (non-hydraulic), is it possible to check the oil level in the reverser without splitting the tractor? If it"s not possible, how important is it to check the level, since its so difficult to get to?

The oil level in a gear type reverser is never checked. The trans oil flows down a galley on the LH side of the transmission case, out a hole in the trans case through the input shaft bearing into the reverser maintaining the level. The main thing on a gear type reverser is they need to be initially filled with oil if removed or rebuilt. If not, they will be ruined before enough oil will flow in to fill it up.

Thanks Lavoy. Then if mine is making noises, its not because of low oil level. Ain't it fun.

No, and the worse news is, the sooner you tear it down the better. It may be nothing at all, some are noisy, that's all. BUT, if it is bearings and such, you will damage a lot of hard to find stuff if not repaired sooner rather than later.
