1010 brake replacement

Post by Joe Iannitto » Sun Feb 21, 2010 4:36 pm

I am in the process of replacing the tranny steering clutches and brakes. So far the project has been going along without any major problems. Today I started to install the final drives and it seems I can't slide the brake drum into the brake band. Does anyone have any words of wisdom to make this project go easier?

Loosen up the brake bands as far as they will go, that will sometimes help. Something I have been doing is to take the brake drum off of the pinion shaft and set just the drum inside the brake band. Cycle the steering lever several times, and tighten the adjusting nut as well. This kind of "shapes" the new band to the brake drum. Then reinstall the brake drum and assemble the clutches and put the final back on, usually goes a lot better. Some people will slightly bevel the outside edge of the brake lining to make it easier too.

I do not know if it is true for the JD1010 but on a JD440 there is a drain hole in the bottom of the housing. You can put a screw driver through the hole and help to align and slide on the brake band.

Be careful if doing that. For a screwdriver to touch the brake band, the band will have to be on top of the casting that keeps it in place. If you install the final with the brake band like that, it will cut it in two eventually.

Thanks for all the words of wisdom. I found Lavoy's advice of tapering the leading edge a little bit worked wonders. I also found a 6ft 2 X 6 as a lever between the final drive and the track rail useful to push the drive in place. A little wisdom,a 2 X 6 and 45 minutes was all it took to finish the one side.
