Blue smoke is oil, black is diesel.
My wife says I smell like gas if I fall in some diesel, oil if I get in the anti-freeze, etc. Darn women, just don't know their crawler fluids worth a darn.

Yea, I guess I cant go by her nose, she always says I stink, I guess I will pull engine and just go through it. I hear a knocking noise, could be wrist
pin? we will see , Im thinking of pulling steering clutches, does anyone know how long clutches last in a machine ? I have know history on this
machine. I hate to change out sprockets and have to tear it down again if it dont steer. Thanks for any input Kevin

Most crawler people will encourage you to do all that you can while you have it apart. If a part is worn, out of spec, or otherwise questionable, easier to replace it now than like you said, "tear it down again".
Clutches are like most other parts as far as how long they will last. It depends on the operator, the conditions it runs in (cycles), and number hours it is operated, and if they are properly adjusted. In many cases one steering clutch will wear before the other due it turning more in that direction.
Unless you are using it in a business, the clutches should last longer than we will.
I have seen a few guys that could ruin an anvil with a rubber hammer, if you know what I mean.

was hoping to get lucky on this purchase . its not bad overall for the
money. I like the rubber hammer joke, sounds like my brother inlaw .
Does anyone know where to get the best prices on engine overhaul
kits, etc. I was always into international Tractors, and new all the good supplys
this is my first deer, except my mower :D

overhaul kit

Post by zippy1wood » Thu May 27, 2010 6:27 pm

I new the last words would say not cheap. some engine kits are pretty cheap on IH so how bad is this one? Does it come withe sleeves, pistons, bearings, gaskets.?

I need to pull it apart see if somethings broke. That nocking rattle sound
seems to go away or change when i shift reverser wich does work. maybe needs fluid?

Zippy,
The reason 1010's and 2010's engine parts(and other parts) are more expensive is that they were transition models and were made only a short time. On the engine it is not 4 separate sleaves but 4 sleaves attached to a "sleave deck" or plate that is only produced( or probably just NOS) by Mother Deere = $$$$.
Also anytime you use the word "Reverser" you can substitute "$$$$$"
due to the commonality with "NOS"(new old stock) and "mother deere"

Only way to learn is to open it up and see what makes it go (or not go)

Question anyone, does the 1010 run a torque converter to the reverser like a 350? could that be where the rattle is comming from?

My 1010 diesel exhibits similiar symptoms. Hard to start, smokes a while, and then clears up. I have to use the primer. I have checked the injectors, and they don't spray very well. I suspect they are part of the problem, also suspect low compression ( It runs, I'm afraid to check the compression!).

My engine was seized when I got it. I honed the cylinders, and reinstalled the same pistons. While I had them out, I noticed worn upper conrod bushings. Luckily, my parts crawler (a gasser) uses the same conrods as the diesel. They were good, so I swapped them. This may be common on the diesels.

I also hear a bit of a rattle from the reverser/tranny area during shutdown, but it is not alarming. Sounds like lash as the parts accel/decel during shutdown.

A 1010 does not have a tq. converter .

No torque converter on either one. 1010 drives with what would remind you of a spring loaded clutch disc bolted to the flywheel. 350 used a few different setups over the years, from a 1010 like setup to a rubber torsional isolator on the later models.
