what I would like to know....

Post by Willyr » Thu Aug 26, 2010 9:23 pm

Ok Folks, here is my dilemna. As many of you know I am trying to make a 420c run aesthetically closer to a JD 420c instead of the combobulation I bought.

So I am getting ready to mount the generator and removed the alternator. What I found was they must have had suction delivery problems at one time. So they replaced it with some interesting plumbing. What I need to know is, how high did the original suction pipe go? Was it flush in height to that rocker arm cover?

I saved your bandwidth this time by making the picturer a clickable thumbnail.

thankyou for your interesting post. However I hope to be a little more true to the 420c design unless I hear otherwise.

Parts book will show you the basic shape. The tube runs a little below the valve cover for a ways, then angles down into the hyd reservoir. Along the valve cover, it is basically parallel for a little more than the length of the head. I don't have a 420 here, so can't get you a pic, sorry.

I will get a pic of my 420 today, but it will be late tonight before I get back.
Everybody is different, I am with you about keeping it as original as possible.

ok thank you for the input so far. Sounds like we are on the same wavelength. You may have to remove the hood to photo the line.

Willyr,

On my 57 420C the tube rises as goes forward passing 1 3/8" over the top of the oil filter nut and 1 1/8" over the top of the distributor cap tower for the #1 spark plug continuing to rise until it's above the fore-and-aft center of the generator and then arcs down to a vertical drop just in front of of the generator belt. I can send you a photo but not until after Labor Day when I get home.

Where did you get the new top radiator hose? I haven't been able to find one. I've ordered one chosen from a picture in a Gates reference book. Hopefully it will work after I cut a couple of inches off it.

the one on my 430 goes up from the pump and bends at the height of the head gasket and along the block till just after the oil filter then turned downe at about a 45* then into the reservoir.
3/4 soft copper tubing and a pipe bender will make quick work of it

Did not have time to pull the hood off of the 420.
I would try to find a 420 being parted out, the lines are basically ready to install. The biggest difference in the 420 and 440 that I see is the big line on the 420 goes straight up and back, not out and around the gen.

Willy, I will see if I can dig out the suction tube for my 420C, I can make a isometric drawing of it and then scan it and e-mail you a copy of the scan if you still need it.
