Hi guys,
Unless this machine has been totally updated, I am lost. The JD 40C serial #(70826),On the left side of the gear box/engine block, indicates to me that is was built in 1955 but clearly has 5 rollers. Is this common? I know that it had extensive work to it before it sat for so long. Am I missing something?
Old and rusty, green, yellow & crusty.

Hi,

No, sounds about right.

The 'M' series tractors were produced 1947-52 and then the 40 superseded it.

IIRC, the 'MC' came out 1949 or 1950, a bit later than the M wheel tractor variant. The MC was 3-roller only, or at least I don't ever recall there being a 4-roller MC. Might have been some right at the end there, given the way Deere tends to work in changes.

The 40 was either 3-roller or 4-roller *at first* but then they added the 5-roller during the 40 series production. Since the 420 superseded the 40 in 1956, then your having a 1955 5-roller 40c sounds about right to me.

later!

Half an hour later with a power washer, he loosened up every link except for a handful and saved the tracks.
I found this in an older discussion from Lavoy and thought it worth a try. I've found my power washer an asset when working on my machine - It lets me see the problem better, makes the work more pleasant (cleaner), with care has few unintended consequences, and it does help loosen things up. Paul

Hi,

And, after the power washing gets it on the road to freedom, go find a ditch with some water in it and run the tracks thru that and they'll really free up. ;)

Everyone: Note that part about being careful with the pressure washer, though. There are things you don't want to point that jet at.... ;)

When we had the dealership, I often had the 'kid job' of running the steam cleaner. One of those *really* makes the shi...er...stuff fly! :P

5 roller track frame was an option from about 64,000 on up.
