420 transmission question

Post by Boss302 » Fri Mar 04, 2011 8:23 pm

Hi, I'm new to the website but not to crawlers... We have a 420 4 speed crawler with the ring and pinion out. We also have another 420 (5 speed)that we use for parts. I was wondering if the transmission cases are different between the 4 and 5 speed transmissions (because the parts numbers are different). We are going to try to put the gears and shafts out of the 5 speed into the 4 speed transmission case. Will this work?

I looked at my parts book for the 420,430 and it lists 6 transmitions 3,4 speeds and 3, 5 speeds for crawler and wheeled tractors.None of the part #s for the gears or shafts match up between thies trans maby do to difrent gear ratios. If the 5 speed trans is frome a crawler and its gears are in better shape maby you would be better off swapping the 4 speed with the 5 speed.

The 4 speed case is in good condition but unfortunately the 5 speed case has a hole in the side of in.
Both of these transmission cases are out of crawlers.

Another question.
Will a 420 reverser bolt on to any 420 transmission?

Hi,

I know that the differential style reverser only works with the 5 speed.

I think the gear style reverser only works with the 4 speed.

I can't look it up in my manuals as I usually do since I'm now working in Texas and my manuals are back on the farm in North Carolina....

Later!

You are asking way too generic of questions and expecting too specific of an answer. The only way to answer your questions would be if you give a specific serial number range on each transmission that you are asking the question about.
As a general rule, all gear type reverser will work on all 420 transmissions prior to 131,309, and can be retrofitted to the 40 as well. The direct drive member is different, and linkages may be different, so this is a general answer, not a specific one.
All clutch type reversers will work on all 420 above 131,309, 430, and 440 transmissions, and will retrofit farther back, but it requires replacement of a lot more parts.
