I am wondering what the value of a restored 420c their is one near me for sale i have seen it shown at our local show by one of our members he has had it for two years now and it is in over restored shape he has all the lititure and has all documatation on it including for all work done during resteration motor work ect... also has the model 62 blade and reverser 14 inc tracks and the model year is a 1957 what would the value of this crawler be us to canadian dollars in the shape it is in depending on what he will really get for it.John
NOTHING RUNS LIKE A DEERE
One over here by Owen sound was for sale for 2 years to clean up an estate. Back then they asked me 8500 bucks It was in real nice shape but I didn't need an other crawler around at that time .And I know the guy that got it he didn't pay more than 7000 bucks times are still tough on all colors of iron . I just bought a 2008 Deere 270 D LC with 1250 hours for 40% of book value .I guess if no one bids after you then you are either the first fool or you were just the last guy able to lift his hand .When buying face to face I figure you just don't insult them with the first offer and you can feel the sale out at that point OR what ever your pocket book can do without as you are dragging the^&@# thing home .At that price it had better be gone over inside and out ,Digitup.

I realize that most of you know all of this, but I am going to say it anyway.
There are more levels of "restored" than there are stars in the sky.
One of the almost bullet proof means of passing off one of these as restored is paint. Most of us know that paint is about the last thing you do when restoring one, but it is the first (and ONLY) thing many sellers do, and the first (and ONLY) thing many buyers look at.
Make absolute certain that if it has been painted, they have reciepts to show all of the engine, tranny, etc., work done to bring the crawler back to the point that is was READY for paint.
Some tale tale signs of a "seller" paint job: the serial number tag is sandblasted, it has the wrong decals on it, the wrong shade or color of paint for the model.
One of the funniest lies they tell is this one. "Steers good both ways, one side needs slight adjustment." What that really means in many cases is that it steers OK when it is cold, but after the clutch packs get warm, one or both sides slip. That is NOT an adjustment, that is a tear down and total replacement of clutch disk.
As for what it is worth, find out exactly how "restored" it really is and we can give you a range.

I would have to echo that sentiment. I have seen "restored" crawlers listed for $5000 before. That is roughly half of what I put in a restored crawler just in parts alone. If the crawler is truly restored, the owner should be able to detail for you exactly what was done to the crawler. Ask what was replaced, what was rebuilt, how it was rebuilt, etc. If he can not provide answers, or will not, then you know you have a Dupont overhaul, not a restoration.

Hi,
In my book, a fully functional original machine is worth the most money.
This means one onto which new paint has not been applied.
But, then I may well be biased. I just described my own 420c!
Later!

I believe the most common comment around here will be "Nice looking machine but the track is too tight."

restored
I agree
for instance
I spent 5000 on a decent running 40c
I spent 1800 on a parts machine
I spent another 4000 on fixing all problems
plus about 2000 man hours over 4 years
and I would call my machine refurbished but not restored
but it looks GREAT
So I would say I have all of 15000 into it, but you would never get that for it, but remember it is a fantastic hobby, not a money maker

I think the single most abused word in the antique tractor hobby is "restored". There are so many people's definitions of restored it is not even funny.
Having restored more than a few crawlers, I will say this. If the crawler in the pic was truly restored, he got way less for it, than he had in it.

I will echo what Lavoy said, and what others know. A crawler can be painted up nice, have a few new parts, and start, run, turn both directions, push dirt, etc. That still does not mean that it is "restored". Only the restorer and the few honest sellers out there really know.
Bottom line, ALWAYS beware of new paint on an old crawler unless you were in the shop where it was properly restored.
That said, many of them will run and move for many years with just a few hours of playing a year.

If and when I find a crawler that has truly been restored to original factory specs, I don't think I am going to moan too much about the paint being "better" than when new.
If you look at the way most tractors were painted in the late 1950's, it would not be too difficult to out paint what they did.
I have seen a number of tractors that still have some original paint. Don't have to look too far to see bad places, runs, skips, etc.

I was just saying that at shows that are judged that it is possible to over restore. Thats why I'm drawn to our local tractor shows Theres no judging its so laid back just a bunch of good people talking tractors.I can appreciate the unrested original as well as an expo resto and realize that most people that"restore"a tractor are doing it within there means its those people that just paint a tractor to sell it that we need to be concerned about.I think we should do what we can to educate our future hobbyist.
