I bought a 1010 crawler that someone else had been working on and it will not pull on the left side. We took it apart and found that the short axle that goes thru the cutting clutch into the ring gear and pinoin goes thru too far past the splines on the shaft where it goes thru the pinion. The person I bought it from said he put in a ring gear and pinion, is there a wrong one that will bolt in, or do I need to disassemble the other side and look in there. According to the parts manual 420,430,440, and 1010 rearends are the same, unless my information is wrong. How can I dertermine if it is the right one?

It sounds more like the the ring gear carrier has the splines worn out of the carrier.

rick, thats a common problem on the 1010s. u have two options-change the ring gear carrier or shorten the axle. my dad bought a 1010 and it took a while for use to figure out the splines were gone. we ended up having a machine shop cut 2 inches off the shaft otherwise we would have had to take the tranny out. as far as i know its still working.

Sounds like I need to find a ring gear carrier, do you know where I can find a used one ? I would rather replace it than shorten the axle.

Sounds good, let me know what you have and how much you want for it. And also how quickly you can ship it. I can use a debit if you are set-up for that or I can send a cashiers check.

Ricky,
I was at the farm today, and discovered I do have a tranny there that still has the ring and pinion in it. It is an early serial number crawler.

The spring was in the right place. I have located a ring gear carrier here close to home, I am in the process of getting it. Thanks for the interest.
