420 generator

Post by tzbmcp » Fri Jul 15, 2011 9:42 am

replacing generator and belt today. since i dont yet have a repair manual. want to make sure im not overlooking an easier way to do this. removed grill/cover. looks like need to drain coolant, then take off radiator, remove fan belt to get to generator belt. remove old parts and put on new including new fan belt. will do voltage regulator at same time. put back radiator and add coolant. i do have the instructions for setting up the voltage regulator. any tips or input would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

You should not need to remove the radiator for a belt change. Just work the belt past the tip of the fan blade.

After reading the manual it appears that the fan pulley is a adjustable pulley (one side turns to tighten / loosen th e belt). According to the manual you loosen the set screw on the side of the pulley. There is a socket screw under the fan (singular) that the set screw locks against. The directions arent very clear wether this screw stops the pulley from moving or that you use the set screw to act as a stop from the pulley turning. Apparently according to the directions your to use a drift and a hammer and drive on a casting lug on the pulley to loosen or tighten the belt. Once the belt is loosened you merely derail the belt from the pulleys.

Reading the directions I still think the radiator could have been left in place. Perhaps lavoy could help here?
