JD 1010 ICD Glow Plugs

Post by 430deere » Sun Jul 31, 2011 10:23 am

Just bought a 1010 ICD with 810 loader. Gentleman I bought it from has always started it with a shot of starting fluid (which kind of scares me, as I know what harm can be done by such chronic practises). I have not had much time to dive in and investigate yet, but how big a job is it to install glow plugs? As I said, I have not even checked out to see if there were any on it originally, but I have a source for new ones. Also preparing to drop all fluids and change out all filters, just to be safe. Any other thoughts on inspecting? Undercarriage looks very good, pins and rollers look good, but I do need to slightly tension the tracks. Thanks!

i belive all had preheaters they are about as easy as changing spark plugs if you still have the org. switch you turn it to the left for preheat then to the right to start and as the starter is engaged it also powers the preheaters

ALL 1010's had glow plugs, and ALL 1010's require preheating prior to starting, regardless of outside temp. Glow plugs only heat when the switch is turned to the left, use 30 seconds for warm days, up to a minute and more on really cold days.
I stock both styles of glow plugs, they are easy to put in assiming the tip does not break off in the pre-cup.

Interesting, I don't think the service manuals detail that. I will have to try it next time I am at the farm.
Thanks,
