40C -- Brake Band slipped off Clutch/Brake Drum??

Post by dr.fireman10 » Sun Nov 13, 2011 12:08 pm

Have gone thru and done the adjustments on my little 40C, right side now steers great but when I went to work with the left side I noticed the brake band is moved inward/not contacting the brake drum on the bottom. There is a little play in the clutch unit but not enough that I can wiggle the band back around the drum. . . that and access to the bottom to push the band back on/over is non existant. Has anyone else ever found this in their machine and is there a way to get the band back on the drum or am I looking at pulling the final to do so? Not sure if it was installed this way or if the band found a way to walk off the drum, this is how I had bought the machine.
Thanks for any insight.

The band got pushed in when the final was installed. Normally you don't notice it until it cuts the band in two. Only way to fix is remove the final.

Thanks Lavoy.

Thats the conclusion I had come to after playing with it for awhile yesterday. The fella that had the machine before me went thru the trouble having new final drives put on the machine (still have JD primer on them) but someone must have missed the band when installing. He had the work done and let his neighbor use the machine for a day. . . he thought the neighbor had damaged the clutch somehow and the machine sat.
Should not be too much trouble to fix one of these upcoming weekends!

Dave.

I have seen and heard about many of them doing this. The band catches on the drum, and the person installing the final doesn't catch it.

Happened to me a few weeks ago when working on my father's MC, but we managed to catch it right away. Had to take final back off, but glad we caught it. :)
