best location for coolant heater
Cold weather is killing my 1010 diesel, I need to plumb in a coolant heater to give me a chance to get iy started.
I was looking at the NT Kat heater. It has small fittings compared to radioator hoses.
Where is the right place to tee/wye it in?

You might also look into oil heaters (some use the dipstick hole) as well as a block heater. Some of the block heaters use the freeze plug holes for the install.

willy there no soft/core plugs on a 1010/2010 block .....fruitc on a 1010/2010 about all you can do is drill and tap a hole in the thermostat housing and use the block drain cock on the left front by the fuel filters the only other hole up top is the temp gauge and i would not "tee"it

I own a '64 2010 loader crawler and live in Minnesota. I put a tank heater in front of the diesel fuel filter but yet behind the radiator cowling. I have the crawler in storage right now so I am going off memory. I think the top outlet hose of the tank heater went to the 3/4" hose that goes into the waterneck or thermostat housing, the inlet hose on the tank heater may have connected to a fitting in the lower part of the block. I can't remember for sure but I know it worked out real well and heats the little diesel to 180 degrees in about a half hour. Good luck.

I have used the kind that goes in lower radiator hose on the volvo artic trucks i have that dont have the port in block. they work good and can be bought a local parts stores here in nc and come in different sizes from 1 in to 2in. you just cut hose a straight place and put in heater but you will need maybe 5 in of length. :D

That's what we install on most of diesel engines (6 cylinders in line and smaller). Use 5/8 silicone heater hose to hook it to the engine. You'll be able to find a Kim Hotstart dealer near you on the website. If you have a Caterpillar dealer in your area, part# is 263-0630 (120Volt, 1000W).

The lower radiator hose heaters do not work on 1010/2010's. I cut a piece out of the metal pipe that runs up the front of the block and put one in there, it did a nice job of heating the water pump up and nothing else.
The original factory design is what works best, a tank heater mounted on the left side of the block and plumbed into the block drain and the gauge port on the thermostat housing. The JD kit used a T to move the gauge sender back out of the housing and ran the output of the heater into it.
I couldn't get my temp sensor out, and I didn't want to break the capillary tube/bulb trying harder, so I drilled a new hole in the flat surface to the left of it, tapped it, and put an elbow in.
Be careful running the lower hose so that it doesn't interfere with the fan. I used a heater hose with a preformed 90 in it for my setup.
The heater, working glow plugs, and working primer pump make all the difference in the world. I let it heat up for an hour and a half or so, hit the glow plugs for 20 secs, and give it a squirt with the primer while cranking it. It takes off first or second try even with it in the teens out.
